Lenovo 510s i3 6100u no longer plays 1440 / 4k smoothly

So like the title says, my laptop used to be able to play both formats. 1440 flawlessly, and 4k almost perfect. Lately even 1440 videos hickup. Be it a video I downloaded from YouTube or any other, the playback is no longer smooth. I use the same mpc. Vlc has the same problem. What could be the cause of it? My laptop is 2 years old.

It could be many things. A software demanding high CPU resources or even hardware.
It can be the antivirus, Win update (WU) etc
I would fist check WU. Open WU page and run it manually. Does it run forever?

Thanks. i pay a close attention to running softwares, so it's probably just a bad update as you suggested. Trying to update now.
