Lenovo Laptop: Win7 64 Home Prem Update Does Not Offer SP1

I have a Lenovo Z560 Laptop. It has Windows 7, 64 bit, Home Premium installed. I have installed all of the available Windows updates. However, Windows Update does not offer SP1. I did some research and Microsoft KB 2498452:
You do not have the option of downloading Windows 7 SP1 when you use Windows Update to check for updates
states if I have Intel integrated graphics driver Igdkmd64.sys, versions 8.15.10.2104 through 8.15.10.2141:
"Windows 7 SP1 will not appear in Windows Update if you have [these] files on your computer.
These drivers are known to cause problems with certain applications that use D2D (Direct2D). For example, if you use these drivers together with Windows Live Mail under certain circumstances, Windows Live Mail could crash."

I have Igdkmd64.sys 8.15.10.2104. I went to the Lenovo support file download page for the Z560 but it only offers the same old file version. I then went to Intel's support page. When I tried to install the latest Intel video driver for the mobile i5 CPU, I received an error message: "The driver being installed is not validated for this computer. Please obtain the appropriate driver from the computer manufacturer."

I believe I need to update at least the Igdkmd64.sys file so Windows Update will offer SP1. How do I update this file? Is there any way I can still use the Intel driver package, Win7Vista_64_152254.exe? I extracted the latest igdkmd64.sys file from Intel's driver ZIP package. It is version 8.15.10.2622. I copied this file over the older version in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers. When I rebooted, the laptop gave me an error message and did not load the video drivers. The resolution was then 800x600. I replaced the older version file and rebooted. Everything was back to normal.

I still need to update the onboard Intel video drivers for the Intel Core i5 CPU HD Graphics. If anyone knows how to do this, please LMK.

I have a Lenovo Ideapad Z560. It is upgraded to SP1, but I downloaded the SP1 and installed it from CD, not from the downloads.

Have you had any BSOD's or other crashes stemming from your Intel video driver? Would you happen to know which version of Igdkmd64.sys you have on your system? It should be in this folder:
C:\Windows\System32\drivers

I have another unrelated question for you. Have you tried playing DVD movies yet? When you play DVD's, do you notice if your DVD drive is constantly spinning at maximum speed. When playing a DVD movie, the amount of data passing through does not require the maximum speed and your DVD drive should be virtually silent. This also creates a lot of wear on the drive.

I have 2 desktop systems. Both of my desktop system DVD drives are virtually silent. Only my Lenovo Z560 does this. I have not been able to find a system solution for this problem yet. However, I have downloaded Lenovo Intel Chipset driver and Lenovo's latest BIOS firmware file. I have not installed either yet. NeroDiscSpeed_11 is supposed to fix this problem but I'd rather not limit the xfer speed of my laptop.

I don't use this machine much. It is set up with my recording studio software and is primarily used for on-site recordings.

I notice the drive is relatively noisy when operating but all I've used it for is loading programs from discs.

Lenovo should already have posted an update to the Intel integrated Core i5 HD Graphics driver. They currently list 2 year old v8.15.10.2104. I find it hard to believe they don't know about this problem as described in MSFT KB 2498452.

As for the overspeed DVD drive, I will install the 2 files I have previously listed and post my results here.

No, because the Intel video installer will look at certain video aspects of the system and produce the same error message. It can't hurt to try. Here is the Intel Integrated Video Installer for the Core i5 HD Graphics. I am positive it won't work so it will not make any changes to your system. After you make the attempt, Intel's installer log will be created at C:\Intel\Logs.

Lenovo is responsible for making modifications to Intel's video installer so it is compatible with the Z560. Why they have not done this yet is beyond me. Because Microsoft has already created a KB listing this problem, Lenovo should already be aware of it.
