Library View Settings

Is there any way to set view settings for files and folders within libraries without affecting child or parent folders?

As far as I am aware you can only set library defaults. You can't change folder views permanently. You can set them temporarily, but they will revert.

Hello Frozen,

You could have separate "Arrange by" view settings in each added right click -> New -> Folder created in the library itself though. The arrange by options will vary depending on the folder template of the library folder. All Included Folders and subfolders in a library will always share the same folder view.

All Included Folders and subfolders in a library will always share the same folder view.

Ah, shame. Hopefully they'll do something about that in a future update. Do you know of anywhere one can make suggestions?

There's not yet a suggestion or feedback link available for Windows 8. This would most likely be the only avenue where this may have a chance of being changed.

I got a email back letting me know that they are unable to do so in Windows 7, but it will be passed along to the Windows 8 team for feedback on it. Hopefully they will be able to.

You could always set up a second library with the view you want. You can have the same folders in it.

The view is attached to the library. Or, more precisely, the library type (Music, Video, Documents etc). The folder view as seen outside the library can also be different. There seems to be some interaction but, for instance, you can view a folder from outside the library in detail view while simultaneously in large icon view within the library (See clip 1). You can with some limitation do similar things by viewing via two libraries(see clip 2)

I prefer to do my browsing through the libraries so your first suggestion doesn't really help. As for the second, to illustrate my gripe, if you were to go into that "Windows 7" folder you have there, it would share the same view settings as its parent ("Articles").

Yes that's true. I was merely trying to show how you could view a folder differently depending on how you get to it. Libraries are a useful feature but still need improvement in their implementation. Maybe Windows 8...

Using Windows 8 Release Preview and seeing this is still not implemented is painful. I don't know what to say. Words are useless. If you say this is too much work, which definitely isn't: You can't even change a folder's damn icon without leaving Libraries. Or if you don't mind an example outside Libraries, you can't even "Open With" multiple files. You really leave me without word. When it's about marketing, you can add something brand new & huge, like the Metro. But you can't even fix simple lackings who knows how many years old.

I think this won't change for full version too but still i have to ask out of my incurable curiosity: Is there any chance to see it fixed on the full version?
