Yeah, this sounds like the laptop's problem.

The first thing I would try is see if you can establish an internet connection through a wired connection. Just plug your laptop directly into your router and disable your wireless adapter.

Let me know if you need any help disabling your wireless adapter.

I suspect your wireless adaptor in or attached to your laptop is giving you the issue.

I can't why your old XP laptop won't connect wirelessly. Windows 7 doesn't do anything to the router to cause this to happen.

In any event, you would be far better served to use the newer Tomato firmware for your WRT54GS router. This was released in 09 and makes your router more compatible with Windows 7. It also makes the wireless networking on your older router work much better.

GARY, BE CAREFUL USING ANY OUTSIDE FIRMWARE.
Follow this link to the Cisco support page for this router model.
Again, the issue is not with your router but with the laptop.
I suggest that you re-install the driver for your laptop's NIC/WIRELESS card.
Here is the Cisco support page for your particular router: Linksys by Cisco - WRT54GS Support

Also, are you knowledgable on how to access your router through your web browser?

No, none,
Just go to your device driver on the affected pc and go to device driver and look for the nic card and ask windows to search for the latest updates.
