Linksys BEFSR81 router or Win 7 problem?

Hello,
I searched the forum but could not find one that matches the issue I have. Here is the situation. I have a laptop with win7 professional wired to a linksys wired router (connected to cable modem). A linksys wireless router is also connected to the wired router but the dhcp is disabled. For 3 days, this setup worked fine. Today, after coming out of hibernation, the laptop lost connection to internet. I can ping the router and other devices except the gateway. I have tried releasing and renewing the IP and sometimes this works. In some cases, i have to restart the wired router. The laptop had no problem coming out of hibernation or sleep before. Any idea what might have cause this and how to rectify?

I actually explained the situation with linksys support and they made no mention of it....twice. This is the second time it has happend to the same model. Linksys thinks that win7, somehow after coming our of hibernation breaks the router...no thoughts on how as it is just an theory. Linksys support asked me to do some tests to confirm that the router is now broken.

The issue as you have explained it means that a dual router set up using the same host means there is a conflict between the 2 routers trying to set up a dynamic address. Since both are attempting to set up an address from the IP, the ip cannot accomplish this. As Chev suggesyed, a switch will do this using only 1 router with as many PC's as you like. You will need straighthru cabling also.

From the WAN port of the modem you connect to the wired router's internet port. Both the modem and the wired router should have DHCP enabled (the Modem is on your WAN side, and the wired router is on your LAN side). Your wireless router is plugged into one of the LAN ports of the first router no doubt and with DHCP disabled, you should not get any IP conflicts (you only have one laptop right, so where is the conflict?).

What is the IP of your wired router, this should be also the default gateway?

I guess I did not explain the setup well. Only the wired router has DHCP enabled. The wireless router has the DHCP disabled-yes it is wired to the wired router and picking up an IP.

The IP of the wired router is picked up from the cable modem and yes it is the default gateway.

There was one more test done to confirm it was broken - the cable modem was connected to one of the LAN ports and the laptop was wired to the LAN ports as well. From this setup, the laptop picked up the IP directly from the cable modem bypassing the wired router. The tech suggested I try the 4 port wired router as it has the latest software so off I went to Tigerdirect. I have it now plugged in the same setup as before....fingers crossed.

Sorry i missed typed, the modem WAN connection goes to the wired router's internet port. Use the LAN ports of the wireless router connected to one of the the LAN ports of the wired router (do not use the internet port of the wireless router to connect to the internet port of the wired router).
