So I have a small home server running off some old crap hardware I threw together a while back. Just recently the old HDD gave out and I realized the mobo has SATA ports, so I went a bought a new HDD with the intent to get the piece of crap working again.
It was running Windows Home Server before, which worked just fine, but I wanted to try setting it up as a Linux box this time.

After some research, I came across a well written article about how to use Fedora and Amahi server to run a home server. The writer had also been using WHS and decided to try something new.
For those of you who are not familiar, this is the website for Amahi.
https://www.amahi.org

They have a dedicated installer too, based off Fedora but simplified for just Amahi (I don't plan to use this as a desktop at all).

I haven't installed the dedicated install yet, but I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on this.

My other idea was to just use a x32 Ubuntu Server installation on it, but I don't quite know how to get it configured properly.

I don't need the server desktop at all, it's main use will be storage accessed from the network which I plan to VPN into and access from my computer (which is not in the network, thus the VPN).

Was hoping to get some thoughts on this before I spend too much time on it. I am currently living in a different state (in college) so the server is chilling here in my parents house. I only have 2 days to get it working before I leave, so if I can't get it setup well with Linux I will have to pop WHS back into it to get it working before I go, but I would rather not do that.

Thanks for all the help guys!

Hello Lordbob, help me understand what you want to do with it a bit better please? Is all this thing has to do is be harddisk space that you can access securely from elsewhere through Internet?
And this server stays at your parents house, connected to internet 100% of the time?
So I also assume it has to be super stable as you don't want your parents to have to reset the thing all the time?

Could you give a practical example of how you used to work with WHS and why you want a new thing?

Derp, I didn't see that. Thanks mate.
I will make sure I look through there.

It is an old computer box that sits by the router hardwired into it, on 24/7.
I use it mainly for pure storage, and I had it setup so I can access it through VPN from outside the network.
And yes, stablility is a huge plus :p

In that case Amahi is a fine choice, should not be a problem for you I guess. You can do that in 1 day instead of two... now to think of something to do for day two....:D
