Linux Light 2.0

I was searching the Net for a lightweight version of Linux for my baby computer (given to me) its a Compaq, presario s5200uk, AMD Athlon XP 2.60 GHz, 30GB HDD built in 2003, I was thinking Tiny Linux / Damn Small Linux but I stumbled across Linux Light 2.0, this has a type of start menu and upon loading I found it very customisable and very easy to use. I downloaded the 32bit OS and found I like it so much I have now downloaded the 64bit version for my i5 desktop .. very happy

There are some really nice Linux distro's out there, i have liked Linux Mint a lot but also come across Linux Zorin recently which i think looks really nice, i keep meaning to try it out.

But there's different types of Linux, for example deb/Debian and rpm, I use Linux Mint and it's based upon Ubuntu deb.

One other thing, I didn't see mentioned on the site [probably just missed it] but the download can create a bootable Live disc for 'try before you buy' which is what I like to do. I did find the mention on http://www.linuxliteos.com/manual/install.html ,about the 3rd page down under"Installing Linux Lite to your computer".

I have used Zorin for a while. Here is a recording I made. It is OK if you want to do simple things like browsing etc. But for more advanced processing it is pretty useless - and it is very buggy. A lot of functions don't work.

I now go with Mint Mate in virtual and on a stick. That is a full fledged OS which is easy to setup and has all the functions you want - and it works flawlwssly. Have a look.

I installed Zorin 64bit on my 2nd in line desktop yesterday (only used for surfing) and Im very pleased with it, very customisable and fast, the firewall is easy to setup and all in all nice one Linux

You are right, for surfing Zorin is a good option. I liked it too. But if you want to use more advanced functions. you quickly hit Zorin's limits.

Nice one - thanks for sharing the link.

Another possibility is the DSL ( 4 letter word , Small, Linux) which I believe is nice and the project Linux from Scratch where you can design and compile your own Linux -- might be quite a project for some but in the end you'd have a perfect customized version which would probably run in a tiny space.

just shows that there IS a life beyond Windows -- although Windows is still incredibly useful too. !!

Hands up all those Linux Gurus when there is some sort of hardware problem (increasingly rare nowadays though) where they don't boot up Windows to get hardware details !!!

My current workhorse though is OPENSUSE 13.1 with KDE desktop where I run Windows VM's on it - such as now - running a W7 VM. It's not the leanest machine but it does the job perfectly.

BTW I made a post over at the W8 forum on how to create bootable Linux and run a Windows VM on it from an external device - doesn't use the internal HDD's in any way- totally portable. From the Linux you can still access all HDD's on a LAN for example.

Note though if you use a UEFI system writing the boot loader to the appropriate partition is a DOG with a lot of the automatic installs -- the NON UEFI versions though allow a bit more user selection in where the GRUB bootloader gets written.
