RESOLVED - Live Mail & AT&T help needed.

Last evening I spent nearly 4 hrs trying to get my bro-in-laws live mail set up for him. I even spent 1 1/2 hrs chatting online with an at&t rep, who finally said it was a software problem and not an at&t problem. SHOCKER!
Initially he could send but not receive, and then after working online with the rep, all he gets now is a password error and we KNOW that the password is correct because he can go online and get his email using that password. I set up a hotmail account in live mail and it works fine, I even set up my own cox.net account on his machine and it worked also in LIVE Mail.
I am at my wits end and cannot help but think it has something to do with the server configuration in live mail. If I remember correctly, the server settings the rep had me use were along the line of smtp.att.yahoo.net. There seems to be a disconnect between live mail and his at&t mail servers... Can anyone help me please?

Hi pmaxon,

Lets check a couple of things, I'm presuming that AT&T is a pop3 service; if different then let me know. As you go through this and make changes, keep a list of what was changed so that you can put it back if we need to tweak something. I will tell you how to configure it for the minimum requirements, the same as I have it. You can always massage the security settings later.

• Open Live mail, press ALT and select ACCOUNTS from the TOOLS menu.

• Highlight your brother in laws account and click properties.

On the GENERAL TAB

• Make sure that the E-Mail address is correct and that full-stop's are not commas and that there is no spaces after the address. Check the suffix also to ensure that it has the correct appendage e.g. .com.au .net .org .gov.de etc

• Ensure that the the box 'Include this account when receiving mail or synchronizing' is ticked.

ON THE SERVERS TAB

• Double check everything for spaces, commas and incorrect suffix's as above

• My incoming mail server is a POP3 server

• Incoming Mail (pop3) = your POP3 address

• Outgoing Mail (SMTP) = your SMTP server address. I think you mentioned that this was smtp.att.yahoo.net

• Fill in the user name and password

• Tick remember password

• Log on using clear text authentication (unless otherwise directed)

• Normally outgoing mail does not require authentication so leave this blank

CONNECTION TAB

• Unless you are dialing up a phone number every time you send email, leave the box UNTICKED

SECURITY

• Normally this is blank as no certificates are required

• The default algorithm stays at 3DES

ADVANCED

• Leave your default Outgoing Mail (SMPT) port at 25 with NO SSL secure connection (don't tick the box)

• The POP3 port should be 110 with no SSL

• Adjust your timeouts on the slider to be at least one minute

• Don't tick the Break apart messages box

• choose if you want messages left on the server or not

CLICK OK
CLICK CLOSE

OPEN YOUR FIREWALL and ensure that there is a program exception for Live Mail and/or ports 25 and 110.

Post all of your setting: port numbers, advanced setting etc, I have ATT I will compare with mine. You will be reading mail in no time. Hope that its all good news.

Trying to recall from memory... which isn't that great these days...

It seems as though the port settings were like 465 and 499.

pop server: pop.att.yahoo.net
smtp server: smtp.att.yahoo.net

My setting are smpt 25
Pop 110

But this will not help. Although I am getting ATT service it is through SBC (CT Att company) My setting are sbcglobal.com.

Your best bet is to use the prior posters suggestions.

TY Bowtie, that is what I wanted to do. But, I found out there is more than one ATT setting depending on where you live.

I got things squared away last night, thanks to all of your inputs. What was kicking my rear was the fact that if you click on the "requires ssl" checkbox AFTER you type in your port number, it switches the port number back to a default and I was not noticing the change. Seems odd that it would do this, but not really surprising coming from MS...
Again, thanks to everyone and my brother-in-law is REAL happy!
