I believe the OP is having trouble with liveupdate of Norton's. SFC is for system file check right? If yes, how will it fix the 3rd party file?

@shane
Uninstall liveupdate and re-install it. You can download liveupdate from norton's site.

Uninstall liveupdate and re-install it. You can download liveupdate from norton's site.

Had a look in add/remove programs and can see nothing that says liveupdate.
Went to Norton website and cant find live update anywhere unless im blind.

Ok hold on.

Are you able to run LiveUpdate properly?

Goto the following link and download the application and run it. Check for the entry LiveUpdate and uncheck it if present.

Autoruns for Windows

Restart your computer and if you dont receive the error message, run LiveUpdate again and check if it works properly. If it does, you are good to go.

Once your issues is resolved, run a complete system scan using malwarebytes and if possible with MSSE.

This issue is the cause of a malware. Beware!!!

Edit: Alternatively, you can download LiveUpdate from the following link.

Type eventvwr.msc in run and hit enter. In the event viewer console expand windows logs and select application. in the right pane find any notification related to your problem(do a search for events which happened at the time when you login), If you find anything post it here....

Yes, as I said, the file is infected. Run a virus and malware scan and get it fixed.

Not for this problem, but for much better performance.

You paid for Norton and that money is gone

Get Microsoft Security Essentials, Malwarebytes and use the Windows Firewall. Just as good as what you have, free and this problem is history. Just my opinion and what I would do.

Hi, shanefromoz.

Liveupdate.js is not a Windows file and is undesirable. See Bleeping Computer: TaskMngr - liveupdate.js - Program Information

If you are still having problems, it appears that Norton did not completely remove the trojan. With Windows 7, you may want to first try System Restore to a point prior to the infection. Windows 7 has a much more robust System Restore than Windows XP and Windows Vista. If that doesn't work, I suggest an on-line scan.

Let us know if that works.

My Computer

OS
Windows 7 & Windows Vista Ultimate
Go into Programs and Features. see if you have ComObject showing. If not,

Reboot into safe mode
Restart the computer
Immediately begin tapping the <F8> key.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the <Enter> key.

Show Hidden Files and Folders
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Now using Windows Explorer, navigate to
C:\Program Files\Common Files\ComObject
and delete that folder ... it will contain liveupdate.js which is a java script.

When done, re-hide hidden files and folders and reboot.

Now download ATF Cleaner Welcome to the Frontpage - www.atribune.org

Click "Main" > check 'select all' (except prefetch) this first time using it, then click "Empty Selected". Do the same for FireFox or Opera if you use either of those browsers.
Next, go to Control Panel > Internet Options.
On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files".
Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop
|MG| Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.46 Download
* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. Copy and Paste that log into your next reply.
