Logitech webcam > immediate BSOD

Fellow geeks.

I got a new webcam, Logitech C600, a couple of months ago. Had problems to install it but eventually got it working. Using latest Logitech drivers.

Haven't used camera now in past two weeks or so. Have tried today, resulting 6 BSOD's! It seems that every time I turn the camera on, it results a BSOD. Happened now twice starting the camera using Cyberlink's QuickCam (different USB port both times), once with Skype, and three times with Live Messenger (three different USB ports).

All other USB devices work, the only change in computer since camera worked last time is Win7 Service Pack beta. Camera drivers have not been changed.

Any suggestions welcome.

EDIT: BSOD's all point to Logitech drivers, no help needed there. It's just that I'm 100% sure I have the current, working drivers, so I'm wondering if this could be so simple as a faulty camera unit, a mechanical issue rather than software and / or driver issue?

Sorry if this is obvious Kari, but maybe the dump files would help the BSOD guru's with your problem, just a thought.

Hi Kari,

Do you have another system without the SP1 Beta loaded? if so you could try the camera with that - It would not be the first time I've seen Service packs mess up previously working drivers - and this is a Beta pack too

Hello Kari,

I believe it might be a defective device itself. But as Derek mentioned we might come up with something if we can just look at the dump files. Quick question did you try to reinstall the drivers ? Maybe a corrupt driver is also a good chance. You might wanna consider reinstalling the drivers.

Derek, as I told the BSOD's are simple to understand even to me. Every BSOD tells the culprit is Logitech webcam drivers. I have now tested this on another rig, using both latest drivers (download) and an older one (from disk). Same thing. BSOD.

So: Reason for these BSOD's is the camera. No problems there, it's very clear. I think my question here is basically unnecessary, this must be because of a fault in camera, i. e. rather a mechanical issue than software issue.

If the Bugcheck or the Error code says something like Bug Check 0x124: WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR then it's obvious it's the Hardware itself.

If it gives the same BSOD error on 2 computers, its obvious that the hardware is faulty.
However, I always try a faulty hardware on Linux OS as they dont cause BSOD. On Linux the hardware either works or it doesn't. I dont think you have any Linux distro installed BTW. Its worth a shot though.


P.S.: This issue reminds me of the early Windows 7 beta days. The moment we installed SuperAntiSpyware, it resulted in an instant BSOD.

Too much whisky now in my blood, but I think this issue is solved. If I shake the camera abit, I can clearly hear some loose parts moving there. This camera is defect. Going to see the vendor tomorrow morning and getting a new one, let's see then. Making one more test, though: my neighbor has C500, which uses same drivers. Going over there to test my cam on his XP pro (don't want to admit that main reason for surprise visit is that he makes the world's best home made herb schnapps).

Confirmed. I gave the neighbors son a C500 on June as a graduation present. He was not satisfied, so he gave it to his father and bought a better one, but at least I knew they have one camera using the same drivers.

Anyway, on his XP Pro it didn't give BSOD but the whole system froze as soon as the camera was connected. No way to get it working. Even after disconnecting the camera, the system had to be hard reseted. We took some more schnapps, tested again, same result.

Defect hardware is IMO the only explanation. Getting new camera tomorrow.

Fellow geeks, the reason I didn't post the dumps is simply that when I had checked them and noticed they were all the same, showing Logitech drivers as culprit, I simply deleted them.

Case closed, thread can be closed or at least marked solved.
