Puget Computers Problem 001 – 22 May 2011

Product Name: Puget 84252
Invoice Number: 00046473 dated 05/08/08
Date: 5/22/2011
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium SP-1 64-bit
Processor: 3.4 Ghz, Intel Core i7 – 2600K
Hard Drives: 2 Hard Drives – 1 TB each

Problem:

While logged on as a standard user and clicking on an application that requires Administrative privileges you are prompted to select SysOp (account with administrator authority). After clicking on the SysOp icon and entering the password the following error message is displayed:

“Logon failure: Unknown user name or bad password.”

Clicking OK brings up the application with full access.

Notes:

This error does not occur when the same action is performed on other Windows 7 Home Premium installations.

It may be that your admin password has expired. You can try logging in as the admin at the login screen. This will give you an opportunity to change the password (you can just re-use the same password).

You can turn off password expiration thusly:

If that doesn't work, one of these should help:

Thanks James but the admin password has not expired. The system has only been operational for about one week. I can log on to the system with admin authority and, of course, it works correctly. There are two users with standard (limited) authority. When either user tries to access a program such as Belarc Advisor, you get the unknown user or bad password. Click on "Yes" and you have full access to the program. The problem occurs with other applications. This same procedure works perfectly on my Windows 7 system. We bought two identical systems at the same time. Mine works. My wife's system has the problem I reported. In the worst case scenario I can do a clean install on her system and start over.

Were the offending program installed for All Users or Just ME? Just a thought.

I cited Belarc Advisor as an example. Belarc is installed for all users as are all the other programs I have tried such as JV16 Power Tools. My guess is that the problem is somehow connected to user privileges in User Account Control but I am guessing. It is odd because clicking on Yes opens the program and you have full access to the features.

Speculation, but first I would try changing the password on the SysOp admin account. If that doesn't work, I would then try creating a new admin account with a new password and reduce the existing admin account (SysOp)to standard just to see what happens. Be sure to create the new admin account before reducing the existing admin (SysOp) to standard or you can lock yourself out of the system.

A bit of good advice: Make a system image before you make the changes. I don't care much for Win7's Backup and Restore. I use Acronis True Image, but here is a post listing free imaging programs:

Many recommend the free Macrium Relflect.

Thank you James, I will try your suggestion but first I will make an image backup using Acronis True Image Home 2011. I found that pressing Ctrl-Enter escalates the limited user to admin authority and that works but it is a work around not a solution.
