I have an issue with a Windows 7 laptop.

Upon starting the laptop it goes through the standard Starting Windows screen and then i get a black screen with the mouse icon visible and movable however the logon prompt never appears. The same happens when starting in safe mode however an error is displayed stating:

Logonui.exe : The Application was unable to start correctly 0x000006

I have performed a chkdsk on the drive and also run windows repair performing startup repair that found no issues.

No restore points have been created so cant try that either.

At command prompt i have tried:

bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /fixmbr

all to no avail.

Other than recovering the users data and re installing the machine from scratch is there any trickery i can perform?

When did the issue start? Has Windows Update run recently? If so, try to restore to a point prior to any recent updates.

The strange thing is, when I searched the Windows Support page on Microsoft.com, it indicates probs with printers and etc... Did you recently install a printer, or update the drivers for your printer?

Check error 0x00000006 - Microsoft Answers for hints...

This is probably the longest I've ever had a Windows machine run without having to restore it to scratch. I'm used to restoring to "factory" about every 2 yrs. I've run with Win7 since new in 2009 and only recently (Nov, '14) restored to clean up the machine from all my 'xperimenting. LOL!! I may never need another machine.

Upgraded to 10 when it was still free, then installed 2017 update.
There is a possibility the issue arose after a windows update, but its not my system so cant confirm. But there are no restore points so that's out im afraid.

With the error code there may have been more or less zeros, the trouble is that doesn't appear anymore even in safe mode. Just black screen mouse icon then reboots itself and the cycle begins again.
