Long Ping time poor internet performance

I just upgraded from Vista 64bit to Windows 7 Ultimate 64 and I am suddenly experiencing periodic poor internet performance on both Mozilla and IE 8. Pages fail to load or they start to load and then just die. No other machines on my home network (running Win XP) on the same router and cable modem are experiencing such a problem.


I ran multiple ping tests to both Yahoo and Google on my Windows 7 machine and my XP machine to see if it was a network issue. There were no problems with the other machines and only my Win 7 machine is experiencing exceptionally high ping times. The problem occurs even when my AVG anti-virus firewall and windows firewall are shut down. (see typical results below)



My Win 7 machine is a quad core 2.2 ghz with 6GB ram and a realtek network adapter, and it is plugged into the router via Cat 5 cable.

Did you really "upgrade" from Vista or did you do a Clean Install when you installed Windows 7? If you did not do a clean install, this could be the reason you are having poor performance.

I didn't do a clean install, it was an upgrade. I had no internet problems with Vista either.

Not doing a Clean Install can lead to problems. It is always suggested that a Clean Install is done over an upgrade. The upgrade may not be the problem this time, but if you have other problems in the future, you might consider doing a Clean Install.

ok bigmck, thanks for the info. I sure hope I don't have to do the full install... I just don't want to invest that much time.

At any rate, I just made one change on my network connection config by turning off/unchecking the TCP/IPV6 support, and those high ping times are gone. While I'm not ready to declare victory, the browser is working great now.

Keeping my fingers crossed for now and I'll post an update tomorrow or sometime this week to let folks know if it got fixed by turning off IPV6.

Well my happiness was short lived. I went to use the computer a little later and sure enough the browser was very slow. Upon running a ping test again, I found periodic ping times of 50,000-70,000ms plus a few "request timed out."

Regarding my high ping times and latency with Windows 7 that I started in this thread....

It turns out that this is not a Windows 7 problem but rather a problem with my home network that Windows 7 (64 bit) doesn't like, however Windows XP doesn't seem to mind. I moved my problem Windows 7 machine from router 2 to router 1 and the problem of high ping times and browser latency is gone completely. So now I just have to figure out how to configure my routers differently to play nice together.

You cant test a network with a ping as what you are doing is a DOS attack and many routers/sites will drop packets to protect its self
