My boss approached me and asked if I would find a new desktop for the office. She said she would like it to last for a few years (5+) I believe and would like it to remain relatively "new" (upper level hardware)...

I just couldn't think of anything better than this...



What do you think she will say?

I am dead serious about that...she wants a new computer in her office that can be the best possible that it can be

You know as well as I know that this system is overkill^90 but I think it would be funny is she agreed to buy it...

I know she wont...we are normally pretty comical together and she will see it as a joke...

I would love just to be able to sit down and use the machine for just a little bit...it is just a monster

Personally, the over the top configurations look nice on paper, but never seem to really pan out in the long run. Instead, buy a new computer every 2 years seems like a better plan. 5-6 years down the road and you have gone through 3 upgrades...but have a modern computer still at a fraction of the cost of the over the top build.

I know you weren't seriously going to build this...but I still wanted to share my $0.02 opinion.

Due to the law of diminishing returns, you could probably build a machine with about 90% of the performance for substantially less. For instance, you could go with only 1 GPU instead of 3 (also there are less expensive video cards with fairly good performance). 4G of RAM would be able to handle most anything you would do with a "business" desktop. Doubt if your boss could use 8TB of data storage so 2TB would more than suffice.

replace one of the drives with a SLC SSD and use that as the boot disk. otherwise she may notice lag.

if she doesn't go for your setup; half the RAM, have a SLC SSD for bootup and at least a 2tb fast HDD for data, and one or two GPU's
also: only one dispay? and OEM K&M? tsk tsk.
At LEAST two displays, a Logitech DiNovo Edge Keyboard, and a Sidewinder x8.

well the i7 EXTREME was the first waste of money.. might as well just get a i7 920 and overclock it to the speed of the Extreme.. could be done in about 5 minutes flat.. and save lots of money.
