Looking for a new printer

Hey all,

My current printer, a Dell Photo AIO 924, is reaching its last days. Its gotten to the point where I cannot install it on any Windows 7 computer. I have it connected to a desktop with XP Pro SP3 installed and its printing, but neither Windows 7 32-bit or 64-bit will work with it even when I try installing the Vista drivers in compatibility mode (something about not being able to enable bidirectional support). I've decided that its about time to get a new printer anyway, but I don't know where to start.

At least I know what type I want, that's either a wireless printer, or depending on the price difference, maybe a wireless all-in-one printer. Either way, the most important requirement is to be compatible with XP, and both Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit is a must.

Anybody have any suggestions?

I would go with a recent Canon All in One (always useful to be able to scan and copy). But chose one that has individual cartridges. Those are easier to refill (saves a lot of money).

Thanks for the reply ! I found a couple of options I may consider......a Canon or Epson.

Just wondering if any of these are good options? I'd be fine with either one, but I've heard from friends about bad reliability issues with Canon printers, is Epson more reliable?

In my opinion and experience with hard-wired printers and all-in ones, i found XEROX to work seamlessly with Windows.7.

For my personal needs, i use Xerox Phaser laser 3117(only Black) which has excellent compatibility with Win.7 ,as you can download the recently released driver as a Windows update(start > All programs >Windows update), and this printer was originally meant for Win.XP, so no backward compatibility probs. there!

I have 5 Canon printers and they all work well. One of my photo printers had a problem with pulling the paper straight. Canon replaced it and even paid all the shipping - and that after 2 1/2 years. What more can I say.

Thanks for the suggestion. I may or may not consider a Xerox printer, depending on how the prices compare, but I appreciate the suggestion

Wow, thanks for the info, maybe my friend was wrong. As of right now, think I've decided on that Canon printer I posted, but I'll do some research on Xerox options first.

Thanks everyone for the help , I ended up ordering this Canon wireless all in one printer, an amazing deal/upgrade compared to my current one.

I can't wait for it to arrive this Friday

Dear McDougal,
Very glad you sorted it out! The only grouse i have against inkjets is,1)price of the refills is on the higher side and 2)if you do not use it often, the ink seem to gum up! It was happening to me with my HP all-in-one printer! Your choice looks very good,anyway! Best wishes,

Okay, my Canon MP495 arrived and I was able to set it up properly. Everything is working great, its an amazing deal ! However....being my first wireless printer, I'm kind of confused on how to set it up. Right now I have it connected to one computer through USB and then shared over the network which is working fine, but I'd like to be able to use the wireless, since there are some advantages. I tried to run the setup on a laptop connected to my wireless network, and it didn't detect the printer. It said something about a network cable, don't remember.

Has anyone who has/had this printer know how to setup the wireless? The manual wasn't much help.....
