Hello everyone, I have been trying to come up with some ideas for being able to perform a backup or file synchronization across the internet.

My Mother who has a new laptop with windows 7 is very gun shy with keeping it on and plugged in when the weather gets slightly bad. This is mainly because during a bad storm there was a lightning strike that took out many things in there house mostly her computer and printer and FIOS router.

So I am trying to get her to use a APC UPS but to help as a disaster recovery for her I want to be able to utlize own file server, Media server that I had recently upgraded to a Dell Precision T3500. Now that I have all this power I want to be able to file sharing with my mother as well as being able to do backups or file syncing as a backup.

I can certainly do a FTP site of sorts or use a product like Gbridge or even Microsoft Groove. I am trying to keep thing very very cheap if not Free. I am currently using a DynDNS.org to be able to do VPN for when I am not in town. I also have to keep this simple for my mother to understand and use.

Please help with some Ideas!

Hi, this may be too simple for what you're looking to do but have you looked into Windows Live Mesh?(http://mesh.com/).

It allows you automatically sync specific folders across computers via the internet as well as being a rather handy remote desktop program.

It's very simple to use even for those of us who aren't tech savvy at all.
