Looking for Old Fashioned Email Program

I would like to find an email program that would not manage web-based email, but would actually download messages from the server and be resident on my own computer. I'm using Eudora OSE 1 now, and now realize that I don't really have the messages on my computer.... I'm just looking at them through the Eudora interface.

I don't want messages out in cyberspace. I'd like to have them on my own computer, and back up as necessary. Call me old-fashioned. Anybody know of a program like that?

Most modern email clients do allow you to turn off html messages. Also if you use pop protocol it will download the messages off the server and delete the server copies. IMAP is the protocol that leaves the messages on the server.

I use Thunderbird; it downloads the messages to your HDD and has a configurable option to leave a copy on the server for x number of days.

Actually, I use the portable version; no installation necessary! Carry it around on a thumb-drive if you like.

It's not a function of the email program but whether you set up the account as IMAP or POP3. IMAP lets you view on server so that any computer you log in with will let you see what was left on the server. POP3 normally is used to download and delete from server (although you can set your program to keep a copy on server). I think you can continue to use Eudora as long as your email provider allows pop3 access. (Most do allow this, but I think Yahoo charges a fee for pop3.) The free Microsoft products are Outlook Express for XP, Windows Mail for Vista, and Windows Live Mail for Windows 7.
