Looking for reliable and compatible Anti Virus Software on Windows 7 64x.

After reading so many posting on the ServenForums I kind of layout these are the best 3 antivirus software, they are AVG Free Edition , Avast and Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE).

I had serious nightmare using AVG Free Edition on my Windows 7 x64, which constantly causing program or opening up file not responding. I honestly do not think I will go back on AVG again (Also, it takes too much memory on real time protection as well as scanning threads).

I would like to hear from everyone to see which one of the above anti-virus program is best in terms of Security Protection, Compatibilities to Windows 7 and performance.

What would everyone recommended the most ?

Thank you

Please Advise. :)

Anything but AVG and you'll be doing something right.

I like my Kaspersky, but you can't go wrong with MSE either.

The upside I can think of by using MSE which is built by Microsoft. it should be compatible and reliable on Windows 7 in theory. I guess they did test it on Windows 7.

The last 2 years, I've really liked Norton AV products (NAV and NIS). It installs in less than 2 minutes which is a far cry from the awful 20-30 minute install/update process of the 2006 & 2007 versions of NIS. Anytime I see someone knock Norton's AV products I know it's because they are stuck in the past when it was a dog. Check out a non-partisan review of NIS to see that it's very well regarded now.

no sorry no problems for me but it seems as though a lot of people last night had problems with an update that was causing avast to throw out fp's all over the place.if you go to the system security forum at these forums you will see a thread titled *bulletin* for avast users

Avast (free) is what I recommend and use. AVG Free will also work, as will PC Tool Anti-Virus Free.

For my experience with AVG Free Edition (I believe it is 9.0 something like that) , that drag my computer performance down really bad. Everything after done download , then scan will take action slowly , every single file and folder I try to open (Most of time I got NOT Responding). I had tried to disabled some of the security feature e.g Scan incoming and outgoing mail. It gains my performance back, however, the point is if I had to turn of my defenses meaning there is no point to using it then. It did not sound secure to me. (PS*: I did not get any BOSD issue, but one time the computer just did reboot itself).

Just wondering what are the comments to everyone here for MSE ? According to the Posting on Windows 7 Forum today, it seems it is running with definition update issue to some of the user. Is that real ?

MSE?

Another attempt to throw another one of there apps down our throats.

They're not an Inter Security Company, they make OS; and ****ty apps for there OS;s. I prefer freeware or open source software any day.

The only Microsoft apps I use are Notepad on occasion and of course Registry Editor.

Out of those three you mentioned, I would highly suggest Avast. For a free anti virus product, this Beta 5 is great.

I've used Avast also and find it decent, if not a bit quirky in it's interface design. I have more PC's to cover than the 3-pack of Norton allows, so those "other" machines at home run Avast. I'm too cheap to buy two 3-packs. LOL!

Now now, MSE isn't bad. You seem to be biased against Microsoft applications judging by that post but I'll ignore that for now.

Microsoft Security Essentials is a great choice for anti-virus. I've been using it since the original beta, I'm currently using the ongoing beta of it which has some quicker scan times for me over the public, stable version.

Its detected a lot of things that others have no detected, I'm not saying its perfect but its quite nice for a free product. Can't go wrong with free.
