Recently migrated from XP Pro to Win 7 Home Prem. 64, I used CC w/enhancer, Auslogic products, Avast, Spybot and Fix it Utilities for keeping my system running smoothly. With Win 7 I have added Malwarebytes, I am not sure I want to purchase the new ver. of Fix it or look for another similar Utility, the old ver. of Fix it I used with XP worked great, never had any problems, but it is not compatible with Win. 7 -

Looking for some suggestions, I have check out Glary Utilities and System Mech., but still leaning toward Fix it - what do you guys think ?

Thanks

Joe

System utility to do what specifically?

Generally, I'd say: a good AV and Malwarebytes.

Beyond that, how obsessive are you about cleaning or "maintaining"?

If mildly: use CCleaner, but not the registry cleaner

If moderately: use CCleaner including the registry cleaner, maybe Auslogics.

If seriously: add some other product such as Glary, Fixit, or whatever.

Most here would tell you to minimize the added tools as you'd be hard pressed to notice their benefit, but the placebo effect is a wonderful thing and who am I to say no to obsession?

All these fixing programs often do more harm than good. I would stay away from them. Just do the regular updates and you will be fine. The more you mess with the system, the more trouble you will get.

i would definitely agree here on this. Better off to not use a fixing program.

As a former reformed XP user ;) It is hard, but you will eventually realize all these "utilities" are not needed. If you have:

CCleaner

Malwarebytes (Free or Pro)

Superantispyware (Free or Pro)

An active AV program (your choice, there is no best ;))

A firewall is also suggested, the built in Windows Firewall at least (look into Windows Firewall Control)

Run Disk Cleanup every so often (especially usefull now that is cleans up superseded windows updates)

Windows 7 will defrag on schedule. Retrain yourself to refrain from always fiddling ;) Windows 7 does a very good job of maintaining itself. A Guy

Thanks everyone, NOT the response I was expecting however - I guess you could call me "obsessive" about computer maintenance, I do enjoy it and do not look at it as a chore and yes I do agree that getting too carried away will get you into trouble - lots of trouble !

So I think I will go ahead and purchase fix-it Utilities, I used it for years with XP and maybe even back with Second Edition, I do not use all the functions it comes with but the ones I use have never let me down .

I am still getting used to Win. 7 and so far liking it :-)

Try to remember your system is Windows 7 NOT (XP).
The things we did with XP in most part are not needed with Windows 7.

The only 3rd party cleaning tool I use on my computers is Ccleaner.
From what I have found Windows 7 doesn't want or need and fix it or speed up tools. Please stay away from Advanced System Care by IObit.

Well, I have given this matter some more thought and decided to hold off on the Fix-it Utilities program and just use a minimal amount of maintenance tools for now and see how that goes - I'm thinking I need to get more familiar with Win. 7

Thanks everyone for your input
