looking for tutorial

Hi folks,

I'm looking for a particular tutorial on moving program files directory to another drive including having registry entries change to correspond to the new location. I used to know how to do it but have forgotten the full procedure. Is this possible to do with little effort or am I on drugs and should I go to detox. lol Any information folks would be appreciated, if there is a particular partitioning program or something similiar to do the required operation that would be the best option for me otherwise I need a tutorial on the matter.

Moving user folders is one thing.
Moving program files is different and should be avoided. I can only promise you problems.

That being said:

Be aware that I've not used this and have not tested same.

I agree and give my thanks and appreciation to both of you, considering seasvixen's post is the way I'm going to have to do it and karl thank you I do agree that moving the entire program directory would be a big mistake and I'm not going to do that but I will move certain directories in the the programs directory to make extra space on the drive and I know that can be done be simply doing as seavixen's little tut suggests. I know both of you and have always given sound advice, I do intend on making preparations for things that might go south, but I think that by moving just regular programs like adobe products and not windows necessary operating files things should be ok. Thank again guys and if you have any more suggestions your advice is always welcome and appreciated..Seth

P.S. Yeah Google is my friend seavixen but Google offers to many suggestions in some circumstances that's why I came here to seven forums cause I'm going to say this in complete confidence that this site is the single best place to get information and suggestions for Windows 7. Just as an example going to Microsoft support 99% of the time offer no solution to the task at hand, sad but true. Seven forums has more experts and experienced Windows users than any other place on the internet and this is me giving a big +1 to the site and it's people here. I appreciate your guy's help.

Thank you much essenbe I intend on looking at everyones suggestions before doing anything and choosing what I believe will be the best method for doing it, you also a good man with sound advice as well.

If you are dead-set on moving programs, which incidentally will gain you very little space on your C drive, then be sure to make a System Image backup using Win 7 Backup and Restore.

If you have enough time and patience, some good single malt and install media & product keys to all your software, I'd rather recommend fresh clean install, moving Users to a new location and then reinstalling all software, this time selecting custom install options and manually selecting other than default install location.

This way you get most of the space you want to without messing with registry. There are reasons why it is not recommended to move Windows and Program Files folders.

Thanks for your kind sentiments Seth, it's appreciated by all of us.

Personally, I wouldn't do what you are trying to do, but I can understand your reasons for doing it.

That said, if it's purely more disk space you're after, have you considered a bigger hard drive?

Yeah Kari that would be nice but really have to much on the computer to be doing a clean install, it will be OK there are just a couple big directories that need to be moved to free up some space, I have a lot experience when dealing with the registry and stuff, the directories will copied from there to the new location and registry entries will be change to correspond to the new locations. It's not to bad of an operation. If I would have just installed the programs the the new location in the first place I wouldn't be in this situation but at the time I didn't know that space would have become a issue, every year programs and stuff seem to be getting bigger and bigger but in my opinion that doesn't make things better just slower and more wasted options in program that aren't needed or will ever be used. :sarc:

Hi seavixen your indeed welcome and I have considered it but to tell the truth the other SSD is practically empty and right now since the government has basically killed the country as far as the econ-NO-my is concerned I need to be frugal with my money atm, but yeah I wish I could do that.

Just an update for others that may need to do the same thing that I needed to do here's a letter I posted to Karlsnooks about one of the program links he offered to me it did what I needed done:

"Hi Karl,

I appreciate your information that you gave to me, just letting you know that Symmover by the way did what it actually said it could do, just have to make sure that none of the program instances or other things related to it aren't running in task manager. So far so good haven't had any problems and everything checks out. Take care Karl and once again thank you.
