I have an old Windows Vista laptop that I want to upgrade to Windows 7. I have done the research and the unit is upgradeable to Windows 7 but since Microsoft moved to Windows 10 I cannot find a new installation package. Does anyone know where I can get one from a reputable source? The old laptop is a 32 bit Dell Inspiron.

64 bit Professional OEM for $140.

Will your machine be able to use 64 bit?

I'm not sure where to get a 32 bit installation disc. Maybe if you look hard enough, maybe on Amazon? Most likely you can still find an ISO download for 32 bit.

"Retail" versions include both 32 bit and 64 bit discs, but this is NOT retail. It's OEM and just includes the 64 bit disc.

Thanks for the information. The machine cannot hold a 64 bit system. I've looked at Amazon and eBay and only find these fly-by-night retailers touting genuine windows 7. I will keep looking. I will keep the post open in case someone does finds one. Thanks again.

If you buy a "64 bit " version , you can use the product key from it with 32 bit installation media. The keys are not bit version specific.

Exactly, just buy it from Newegg for the key, you can create a 32 bit installer right now.

Does your Vista install allows a legally free upgrade to Win7?

Yes, I can legally upgrade, but I've had issues with upgrades in the past. I really want to wipe the system and do a full install. There's no data on the system right now. I migrated to a newer laptop years ago. I just want to use the old one as a back up.

Yes, I can legally upgrade.

Then you are all set.
Just get an ISO image and activate from the command line using slmgr and the OEM product key.

1) boot to vista,
2) create a restore point
3) download the heidoc.com download tool
4) run the tool
5) select the version, click confirm
6) select the language, click confirm
7) the tool will then compose a url (valid for 24hrs) to download the iso from microsoft.com
8) click one of the buttons on the right (32bit or 64bit) to copy the download url to the clipboard. It will look like this: https://software-download.microsoft.com/pr/Win7_Pro_SP1_English_x64.iso?t=0bd07c33-7e3b-411e-8f5c-d7807exxxxxx&e=1482190100&h=4ecda8d5209fa8b53e93daad34cxxxx
9) exit the tool
10) paste the url into a browser window on any computer to start the download (or use curl or wget) .

Running the tool will modify your registry, but it doesn't matter since you will be doing this on a system that you will be deleting. The heidoc tool gives you only a few chances, after which the tool will not work without rollingback to the restore point and starting afresh with step 3.

You can also download the iso directly within the heidoc tool, but then you don't really know the source of the ISO image, that is, it could be a hacked version.

One weakness of the heidoc tool is that the tool doesn't provide a sha1 hash with which to assess the integrity of the downloaded iso file. Did it download correctly? Did it get hacked enroute?

An alternative is to download some iso from the web, compute the sha1 hash, then see if the hash matches one on the microsoft website.

I have not downloaded yet. Been a little sidetracked with the holidays. I'm looking for Home Premium, but have no problem with Pro. For what I want the laptop for, it doesn't matter.

Looks like you`ll be buying W7 Pro from Newegg then, that`s all they have left.

I have no idea what TomF is talking about in reply 11, going from Vista to W7 for free ?

"Just get an ISO image and activate from the command line using slmgr and the OEM product key."

Maybe someone could post a tutorial ?

Thanks. I will probably take care of this after New Years when I have more time on my hands. As for the post from Tom F, I know what he's about. When Vista failed (terribly) Microsoft offered an upgrade to Win 7 from Vista. Basically, Win 7 is Vista without all the annoying stuff. I attempted an upgrade like this (many years ago with an old Windows OS) and the upgrade was not acting as it should have. I'm sure Microsoft has cleaned up it's act, but I'm gun shy because of it. Thanks again.

I thought that was only possible with a upgrade disc, something you had to buy which is long gone.

As you mentioned, Upgrades are not good.

Vista Failed ??? I thought it was great compared to XP :)

The top five reasons why Windows Vista failed | ZDNet

Not to start a debate, but XP was hands-down more solid than Vista. Less crashes and anytime you tried to unmount an external drive, you had to close all explorer windows. XP Released the drive on the request. And that's just a couple that came to mind immediately. There were many other shortcomings that I experienced. Win7 fixed all that, but I noticed some of it came back in Win10. Thanks anyway.

I agree John, everyone has different experiences. I didn`t have any issues with Vista.

I loved it :)
