If they provided a ZIP file, my guess is that is it not an EXE. Had it been an EXE I'm pretty sure that's what they would have provided.

So the ZIP file probably contains an INF file and very likely also includes possibly (1) a CAT file, (2) ICM or ICC files.

The INF file is actually "the driver" (and will certainly install the correct name for your monitor which will then appear instead of "generic PnP monitor"). But for a monitor there is also generally a default correct color profile (ICM or ICC) that gets installed for the "color management" of your monitor to make it look the best it can. That's where the CAT comes in as well, if the INF file makes use of it. All of this happens when you "update driver" and these files are available (as I'm sure they are in the ZIP file).

Anyway, if it is a ZIP file and does contain the several files I've described above, just unzip it into a folder, and then "update driver" for your Device Manager" monitor item, and point to the folder where that unzipped set of files lives. It should all then get installed and applied automatically.

NOTE: if it had been an EXE, all of the above would have happened just as automatically but without your having to go through Device Manager and "update driver" yourself. The SETUP.EXE in the self-expansion that EXE would have done all of this for you.

Question: In Device Mgr., under "monitors" I see a "generic" PnP monitor and a "M$ driver", I have looked on the CD disk that came with the ViewSonic, there are quite a few items listed, I would like to just install the ViewSonic monitor driver and NOT a lot of stuff I don't need -

Can I just put the ViewSonic disk in the tray, go to Device Mgr. - monitors - properties - driver - and click on update driver and point it toward the CD and let it find and update the Monitor driver ????

Just remembered - I also have downloaded the Monitor Driver from the ViewSonic web site, it is a .zip file, I suppose I could open this and find the .exe file and run it ?

Specifically - go to device manager, right click on the monitor, click update driver, Browse my computer for driver software, and point to the folder where you unzipped the files, click next, and all should be good. You should now see ViewSonic named as the driver.

If the zip file contains an exe, just click it and let it run or follow the directions. Again, the same should happen when finished - Viewsonic is now named as the driver.
