Losing Icons

I've been trying for days to figure what is causing me to lose all Office 2010 icons, Adobe Acrobat and pdf file icons and Windows Mobile Centre Icons. It driving me crazy. I have been creating and restoring images all day and have discovered something very strange.
I just installed Windows Live Messenger. As soon as it was finished, my icons disappeared again. The strange thing is that according to System Restore, a critical update was installed. Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB973923) was offered but I did not install it and in fact, it still appears when I check for new updates. What then is this critical update that is causing the icons to revert to "unknown" icons? The worst thing is that simply using system restore to roll back to before this mystery update was installed doesn't bring the icons back. I have to run Acronis and restore an image.
Anyone got any ideas as to what the hell could be happening? I've attached screen shots which show what I'm talking about.

Actually i got this problem the other day, I thought it was because i changed the icons for those programs. I ended up doing a system restore. worked fine for me afterwards

Strange! Clearly no critical update was installed today (according to the update history at least) But System Restore says there was! It has to be this that is wiping my icons. I should also mention that rebuilding the icon cache doesn't help either.

This is getting stranger! I just installed Silverlight manually (ie: not through Windows Update) and lost the icons! I can't find anybody, anywhere with this problem or who has an inkling as to what could be causing it.

I don't see that listed in my update history or in my hidden updates. I can't work out what's going on. I thought it was an update doing it but when it happened after installing Silverlight manually, I was thrown.
What I'm going to do is change to a default Windows theme, install the updates one-by-one and see what happens. It has to be related to the custom theme I'm using because the same thing is happening to me at work.

I had this problem myself a few weeks ago. My icons uninstalled and so did my topshell. I know it was caused by an Update, but i dont know which one exactly. I have installed my icons again now, but i had to give up on topshell after a few tries with no success

I just downloaded them again (from virtualcustoms) and installed again. Before that i did use the uninstaller and the cleanup files that is included with the icon installer

No...the icons I lost were Office and Acrobat not my custom icons.

I didnt loose any icons. My icon pack i used was just uninstalled and all my custom icons was been returned to the default icons

I gathered from this post that you had the same problem as me
Anyway..I'll have to try using a default theme, installing the updates then switching back to my custom theme and see what happens.

UPDATE: It doesn't matter which update I install, during the update process my icons turn into "unknown" icons. I've decided that I won't be installing any Windows Updates and Ill just hope that a fix comes out before or soon after SP1.

well losing icons in this thread is your office icon right. if it comes from custom icon,it can be reinstall again. but this one is the office icon itself. i was trying to suggest reloading icon cache but you already tried it and it didn't works right? when you right click>properties on the icon. Does it shows the right icon? i mean in the properties window

For this very reason -- and similar -- I am, and have been, installing updates on a discretionary and ad-hoc basis. I will say again that i think it's best to read the accompanying update info (left-hand side) and decide then whether the update is absolutely necessary (optional, recommended or mandatory -- and they are rarely the latter IMHO).

Now it's gone beyond strange. During the installation of Photoshop CS4 the icons changed! All Office icons, PDFs and Windows Mobile Center. This is a clean install from only 2 days ago and no Windows Updates have been installed. WTF!!
