I bought Windows 7 Home Premium online and downloaded it when my Vista crashed and wouldn't reboot. They asked if I wished to purchase a hard disk back-up to the download and I opted to pay for them to send me the disk. I had no reason to try out the hard disk (which reads Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit)until I had to do a recovery in February of this year. When I started the recovery by booting from the disk MS had sent me, I got a message indicating that I had an invalid product key. I got a new product key generated by MS tech support and it allowed me to do the system recovery. However, when I finished, I had lost the ability to burn a CD. I'm a songwriter and it's not at all unusual for me to be burning a CD or 3 every day. I usually relied on my D.A.W. software (Adobe Audition ver. 1.5) to burn CD's. When Audition began to give me an error message after every attempt failed saying I should check my CD burning device settings or contact the manufacturer, I tried some software I had gotten with Vista - Roxio Creator 9 and it failed. That's when I turned to Windows Media PLayer version 12.0.7601.17514 and it began giving me an error message saying "Windows Media PLayer cannot burn the files. If the burner is busy, wait for the current task to finish. If necessary, verify that the burner is connected properly and you have installed the latest device driver." I have Windows Update on automatic and any user can install the updates so I don't think the drivers are an issue. I guess I also right-clicked the sound, video, and game controllers in Device Manager and verified the up-to-date status of the drivers. I have been a chronic caller to the Answer Desk since February being assigned at least 5 different case numbers. The last 2 times I called, the tech acted as though they were going to help me by staying with the problem until it was solved only to leave me 6-8 hours later groggy and ready to agree to anything just to end their ineffective help which was wearing me out. I wasn't given a case number for these last 2 marathon sessions and I began to wonder exactly what was going on but decided to devote my efforts here instead. I've installed Service Pack 1 and my HP/Compaq C700 laptop with an Intel Pentium Dual Core CPU T2370 @ 1.73GHz and I have 2GB of RAM and an internal HD of aprx 150 GB incl. the Partition; a Maxtor w. 149 GB external HD; an Iomegga external HD w 330 GB; and a Toshiba external HD w. 1.5 TB. That's about all I can think of, except I did try to use the troubleshooters - both in Control Panel and others that the Answer Desk people downloaded when they had remote control of my laptop. Thank you in advance for any help you may be able to give me. DL

Thank you for taking an interest in my problem. Yes, I am able to play/read disks. I've included an error message detail that I'd forgotten I had. Again, this is crippling for anyone wanting to avail themselves of the capabilities their machine affords them. For a songwriter trying to interest publishers/producers in his original material, it takes it to an exponential level of frustration. DL/slo

I have a recording studio (using Sonar X2).

When you reinstalled, did you install the motherboard chipset drivers? They are key to a successful install and optical drives can be a problem without the chipset drivers. There are no 3rd party drivers for CD/DVD drives, just the default built in Windows drivers. Check HP for chipset drivers. Vista drivers will work with Win 7 (and in some cases even XP drivers if installed in compatibility mode).

In reference to the Roxio buring software. I do part-time PC support and have found Roxio to be buggy and the Roxio "Drag to Disc" (also called Direct CD) to cause conflict and read/burning problems. If you still have Roxio installed, I would suggest uninstalling it.

Do you show any error code for the drive in the Device Manager? or does it show working OK? In either case, RIGHT click on the entry for the drive and then LEFT click "uninstall". Restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall it. If there were some type of corruption in Windows for the drive this will fix it.

On the other hand, the drive may have developed a hardware problem and if that is the case it will have to be replaced.

I tried to make the Message above read "Wish You Were Here" and we're not making oblique refs to Pink Floyd. I looked any for any trace of Roxio and, finding none, I uninstalled the CD drive in Device Manager. I re-started the machine and went to HP to find the Intel Chipset driver, found it and downloaded and installed it. I think it auto-re-started at that point. I went to windows first and tried some of mine from the Library. It said it found errors in the files and no indication of rights to record. Gave myself CPR and tried burning the same files in Audition and got the same error message telling me to check the Device Settings and then check with the mfgr if all else failed - wait a minute, this may have all been worth it - we'll call the new band "If All Else Fails". I think it's worth trying some pre-recorded, approved by God and Bill Gates and the author (not me) classic rock single cuts that I have on a Hard Drive. Anyway, thanks a lot and I'll keep posting any progress on the thread. Until then ............

slo, no offense, but please hit your ENTER key once in a while to avoid having long run on sentences and/or paragraphs, it is very hard to read.

I think you still have issues with that drive?

Here are Sense code explanations to ponder:

Thanks for Error Codes to ponder

I don't understand your last sentence about "a new, always failing brand of blank". It must refer to something unstated that I'm unaware of. You're welcome to use whatever length sentence you're comfortable with and thanks for your help. slo
