Computer noob here but I ordered a laptop from a laptop/PC building website without an OS to save money (poor student) as I planned on using Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry Pro through DreamSpark but it's been causing problems with the laptop. My friend has a Windows 7 key so I'm trying to install Windows 7 now.
I'm trying to install Windows 7 via USB but I'm having some trouble. I've entered the BIOS Menu through "PC Settings" and have changed the boot order to my USB with a Windows 7 ISO copied onto it. Should UEFI be enabled or disabled in the BIOS?
With UEFI disabled and if I just let the startup run I get a black screen with "BOOTMGR is missing". If i press F7 for boot options and pick my USB, the first screen after clicking "Install Now" I get is "A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a drover floppy disk, CD, DVD or USB please insert it now" even though the USB is plugged in.
With UEFI enabled and mashing F7 on startup and picking my USB, a black screen with "Reboot and select proper boot device or Insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key."
With a CD with the ISO burnt on and UEFI enabled, I get to the "Windows is starting" (along those lines) splash screen with the Windows color dots and it freezes. With a CD and UEFI disabled, I can get to choosing the Disk and Partition to install to but it gets stuck on "Expanding Windows files (24%)" and fails and I get Windows cannot install required files, the files may be corrupt or missing. Error code 0x80070017.
With no USB or CD in I'm stuck on the "Reboot and select proper boot device or Insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key" and can seem to do nothing except enter the BIOS menu (might be more options I can access that I'm unaware of)
Any help to try get me sorted would be really appreciated. I played around with settings to get to this point and can't remember everything I did but if people have questions I can answer them to the best of my abilities. Sorry for the long post!
