Lost program icons...

This happens to me quite regularly and its a complete pain in the rectum!! Office icons, messenger, pdfs seems to be a common problem here and quite worrying. I managed , just, to uninstall office and a reinstall gave my icons back cant be arsed with messenger as its crap anyway

Look i installed PHYZIOS studio, i have installed before also without any problems...
and the thing is if you look at the Windows Live icon only cross could be seen.
And reinstalling the pograms didnt help
The files like .pdf and .docx can be opened but no icons

Try booting into safe mode, then rebooting into Windows normally. See if that corrects the problem.

I agree with the others, this is gotta be a corruption in the registry. Tell us, have you used any installed stuff like registry cleaners????

That's a real bummer. I know this won't help you right now, but always make regularly scheduled registry backups. Your not alone, most users don't, unfortunately. If I were you, I would try an OS repair using your Windows DVD, or the repair partition. I can't stand missing icons.

Hmm, this is a real stab in the dark, but maybe SFC /scannow might do something, possibly that program you installed that stuffed things up changes system files somewhere, and made them corrupt? Sound really stupid i know, but just see if it does any good.

I reinstalled...i had tried repair didnt work

Now how can i know which theme was tht......any body knows tht theme of the screen shot i posted...i took from devianart and cant find it

yesterday i installed netlimeter 10 and a few programs (read programs NOT shortcut) lost icons including all office programs. everything i tried did not helped.... maybe it is time to write to microsoft.

Hi Guys

I have had his very same thing happen to me several times and I am afraid the only thing that worked was a complete re-install. Touch wood I have not had the problem now since my last re-install acouple of weeks ago. I think that this is happening to too many people for it to be a co-incidence .. there has to be an inherent problem in Windows 7 I think.

What worked for me was right clicking icon, Run As Administrator, and then once program loaded I right clicked the icon again, Properties, Change Icon, selected appropriate icon, ok & Apply

Hope that helps anyone else with this issue
