Lost search function - (Win+F) and "Programs and Features" fail.

I am stuck and have actioned everything where I can in the following link : http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/25343-windows-search-turn-off.html.

Issues I have

1) NO search Tab on the folders option (only General and View)

2) [WIN] key + 'F' fails as there is no search box even though the pop up window appears

3) No search in the windows menu or on the top right of any explorer windows opened.

4) Ran "Programs and Features" in Control Panel tthe pop up window is empty, no list or tick boxes just plain blank white.

5) Ran troubleshooter for 'Search and Indexing' and get the following problems which cannot be fixed automatically :

6) In services activated search

"Windows could not start the Windows Search service on Local Computer."

"Incorrect permissions on Windows Search directories" : Not Fixed (Red cricle with white cross' symbol)

"Windows Search service not running" : Not Fixed (Red cricle with white cross' symbol)

I have searched the forums and other areas of the web. Everything is indicating that the function has been totally removed/disabled. I am unsure how.

Oth links I have read and followed :

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/36599-search-windows-7-a.html
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html

http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/131684-lost-windows-search-feature-even-services-comp-management.html

When starting in services windows reports it can not find the specified file -system error 2.

Please help.

Thanks

Yeah - the interface picks them up and converts them, unless the line is in a codebox.

There's one of your problems, anyhow - the file appears to be missing! There's nothing else wrong with the output.

Please look in Windows Explorer for the file C:\Windows\system32\SearchIndexer.exe
If it exists, right-click on it and select Properties - tell me as much about it as you can.

If it does not exist, then we'll have to work something out - do you have another machine running Win7? Is your disk a proper holgrammed one, or a Recovery disk (if you have a disk at all)?

Try running SFC specifically over the file (whether it exists or not) - SFC /scanfile C:\Windows\system32\SearchIndexer.exe
What response do you get?

There was a Search update - but I'm having problems finding it :(
My version of the file is 7.0.7601.17610 - modified 4 May 2011.... ah! found it....
You cannot delete long URLs from the browsing history in Internet Explorer on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2
try installing that - what happens?

Hi Noel

Been busy :)

• Updated BIOS
• Checked the SerachIndexer.exe it exists (ran with admin permissions no response positive or negative).
• Properties - photos attached (and an image of the blank Turn Program features on or off)
• Disk is supplied directly from Microsoft (marketing) it's a Windows 7 Ultimate signature edition with holograms, Steve's signature embossed on case so it fully legitamate and supplied just prior to the offical launch.
• SFC /scanfile=C:\Windows\system32\SearchIndexer.exe came back fine (see attached).
Version of Search is dated 04/05/2011 @ 06:19, ran the updater link but reports already installed.
• Snapshot of Indexer troubleshooting

Ok I;ve made a decision. As well as other probloems i believe the SSD has problems.

Repair failed.
When running chkdsk /r the system freezes on the one of the steps : file check (Step 4 I think).

I am caught in a loop as I can not by pass it. My mother board has no PS for keyboard and whatever usb port I use the keyboard is disabled at the point windows boot request press any key to bypass.

Restoring from image file also failed (BSOD) 0x0...9 code.

I am now going to install fresh and follow the SSD guide pre installation from the forums.

Thank you for all your help guys and rep points on the way.

I hate going down this route as I feel we have not succeeded. Saying that, I have learnt a lot from everyone and can now go that extra mile with the knowledge shared here when diagnosing future issues.

Hope the post helps others should they fall fowl and start their journey.

Thank you all again.

Peace

Wondering if I should use the SSD as a secondary data drive for programs rather than the OS or maybe the otherway round. Undecided yet.

Thank you

No problem - I see that the reinstall hasn't gone too well :(
I too hate admitting defeat, but it does sound as if you may have hardware problems, and need to get them sorted before attempting anything else.

Thanks Noel I am just going to run some tests from Brittons links.

Already submitted an RMA with OCZ for the SSD.

You're welcome and good luck on the SSD.
I just finished a clean reinstall myself due to an undetermined no-boot issue, ugh.
