Lost USB HD & Flash drives' custom icons.

Hi,


Most recently, the custom icons I made for my USB HDs & Flash Ds have disappeared even though I reloaded the original Icons & [autoruns] on the drives several times.
I have viewed a solution on the W7 forum at Drive Icon Change. However it seemed to apply only to icons originally included with W7 installation.

Q: is there a different [simpler] way to do it or do I have to go into the registry which I'm reluctant to do. If so please advise.

Hello klx,

You should be able to still use an autorun.inf file, but it looks like you have the syntax wrong. See OPTION ONE below to see if this may help.

Which [autoruns] is correct?

Below is the syntax of the [autorun] I have tried on 2 PC, w7 pro32 bit, XP Pro to no avail.


1] Original Working syntax 11-29-2014
500 GB AUTORUN.INF
[autorun]
icon=\500.ico
label=500 GB W-D



2] W7 Option 1 suggestion
500 GB AUTORUN.INF
[autorun]
icon="500.ico"
label=500 GB W-D



3] Another website suggestion
500 GB AUTORUN.INF
[autorun]
icon=500.ico
label=500 GB W-D

Why dont you enter the correct syntax I should use, it would me help greatly.

Make sure the .inf file is named only autorun.inf. It won't work if named anything else.

Be sure that the .ico and .inf file are in the root directory of the drive. Next, have the contents of the .inf with this below to see if it works for you.

icon="500.ico"
label="500 GB W-D"
