Hello,

I have a almost new Sony vaio laptop. The HDD gave up and died. I didn't receive any windows cd-s with it, it was all preinstalled from Sony store. All I have left is the authenticity sticker in the back of my laptop. So I bought a new HDD and i need to install windows now. Where do I get another windows 7 to install and make it genuine with my product key?

Thanks.

I agree with scrooge.

If under warranty get it replaced (my preferrence) or fixed.
Is it not possible to get hold of an OEM disk from a kind
retailer and use the product key from the mentioned sticker scrooge?
I would try that first before purchasing a new OS disk.

I was just wondering why they don't give you a copy of the windows? I already have paid for it. I dont know how exactly works. Where does the store gets the OS, or it comes from the manufacturer, my case Sony?
Maybe I can ask Sony to provide me a OS backup disk?

You can download legitimate Windows 7 .iso images and burn them to DVD, then install with your product key.
We're not allowed to provide links here, but a Google search for MyDigitalLife will set you in the right direction.

There's no need to actually pay for another license, that would be a waste of money...

As far as I know, this is OK to mention - if against all expectations I'm wrong, I'll get my punishment soon enough. (Yikes!)

But the MDL downloads are actually regarded as safe and "untouched".

Corazon is right. These are official iso-s and without the proper key and validate it wont work. I do not see a reason this to be illegal.

I agree again! :)

An OS disk is an OS disk.
In my opinion it only becomes illegal for the
dodgy brothers installers using WAT remover
and other tools in this vain.

It's NOT necessary to buy a new license.
go to the Sony Website, and order a set of Recovery disks for the machne - they're usually aorund $50.

OR borrow or download a Retail install for the licensed version of Windows (check the COA sticker for details), and use the Key on the COA sticker for installation.

The store wont accept it as I already told them what I did with my HDD (tried to recover my files and used a enclosure usb and other tools on the HDD).
I already downloaded the official iso, I will do a clean installation (on my brand new WD 640 HDD :) and activate my OS over the phone using my COS. If any problems I will let you know.

Thanks again.
