Hello, I am running Windows 7 HP and after one night of allowing a friend online :\ I'm seeing some weird stuff. I first noticed the problems when I noticed I nolonger have a wireless network adapter, its just not there. When I attempt to access certain elements of Windows there is about a 25 second delay and then a security popunder appears in the start bar asking if it is for the component to run. When I click no nothing appears, clicking yes also does nothing except for a few of the programs like Device Manager which shows the Window for device manager but a completely blank area where the device tree would appear. Here's an example:
1-Open the System window (Computer -- Properties)
2-Click Device Manager
3-25 Second delay - Popunder "File Name: mmc.exe File Origin: Hard disk on this computer"
4-Empty device manager

I get the same reaction if I attempt to run other windows components like: regedit, system restore, Admin Tools.
Also in My Computer a new HDD is showing as drive Q: If i try to access it it shows access denied. It does not appear in Safe Mode
I have the ability to access the registry through boot discs. Any ideas here? Virus and malware scans are negative.

you can try a system restore to a point before your friend used your computer... run a full virus scan ... hope this helps ;)

Thanks for the quick reply.... Although system restore was enabled before the problem, I cannot access the program in windows and when I attempt from the boot menu Windows finds no images to restore.

run sfc /scannow from a command prompt ... if this does not work you can do a repair install to restore your system...

For future use, create a guest account for friends to use and password protect your administrator account. That will keep damage to a minimum.

Kill your friend and clean install. It is the only way to prevent a re-occurance
