Thank you for your reply. I think you have found the problem. It is a USB3 SD card reader. The driver (version 3.0.8.0) is old. I followed your suggested link but cannot find the actual updated driver. Googling the driver comes up with a version 3.0.23.0 but I can't seem to find anyplace to download it. Any ideas?

I did unplug the device and have not had a BSOD or any problems since then. Fingers crossed! If there is no readily available updated drive, I could remove the device and maybe buy a different one. I use the device to import my RAW images into Lightroom and the increase in speed when compared to USB2 is amazing!

Again thanks so much for pinpointing the problem.

The card reader has "Uspeed" and "USB 3.0 Card Reader" on one side and "09N0JH" on the reverse.

if this is your product most items seem to be plug and play, if this is the case try uninstalljng device reboot and plug back in again, windows should auto configure the appropriate driver

Pauly. I have explored this problem some more. The actual culprit is the USB 3 board in the Dell Alienware PC. Not the plug in card reader. And I'm guessing the reason I haven't seen problems is that with the it unplugged, the Dell component isn't used. I went to the Dell support site and downloaded the driver and it is the same one I have installed. I have "reinstalled" the driver and it says something like it is repairing the existing driver. What I was wondering is if it would make sense to to uninstall the devices (root and hub) and then reinstall again? Or should I just leave well enough alone and just only put the card reader in when needed and then remove it as soon as I'm done with the upload. Thought? I have also ordered another plug in card reader by Lexar. Just to see! Thank you again for your help. Ver professional response on this forum.

Not going to hurt uninstalling and reinstalling device but if you already have latest driver installed then may not achieve much, you could see if there is an alternative driver available from windows update but be aware that dell often mod there drivers so they are custom to the machine but being what it is for i doubt it.
Personally i would uninstall and reboot and see what happens, if windows cant provide a driver then you always the dell one to install

Let us know how it goes :)

Pauly. After a couple of days with no BSOD or mouse freezes, I think I will just leave it alone. I have. Been able to insert the USB 3.0 card reader with an SD card and importing 100+ raw photos successfully. I then remove the reader and card and all has been fine. Did it again and removed it. I'm going out of town for a week but will try leaving the reader and card in when I get back to see if I can get it to fail.

Thanks again for you help. Much appreciated.
