Solved Macrium creates 4 new partitions

I have 2 partitions, named
C HP_SYSPROG
D HP_DATA
CD drive is K

On my exterior HD, I have 2 images:
E IMAGE_HP_SYSPROG
F IMAGE_HP_DATA

I lost my StartMenu for some reason (Will ask about it later,) and I was trying to replace it with the one in IMAGE_HP_SYSPROG. I did something wrong because I rarely use Macrium. I just wanted to open the image and extract the folder, not use it to restore a partition.

I clicked "Explore with Win Explorer," didn't get the right results, and it made 4 new partitions all called "HPSYSPROG," lettered G, H, I , and L, each 159GB. Now it won't let me format them, saying they're write-protected. I suppose they're all chopped off from Partition D, but they don't show up in Macrium, only Win Explorer.

When you clicked "Explore with Win Explorer," the images were mounted as virtual drives. You can only copy from them, you can't change them. Use Macrium to Un-mount the drives or close Macrium and restart the system to close the drives from explorer.

They don't appear in Macrium, but I rebooted and they're gone.

I see now the original problem : ClassicShell StartMenu didn't work. I reinstalled it and my StarMenu is back. I have my CS profiles backed up on my Data partition anyway.

1--But I did get 2 error messages when I reinstalled CS. One was:

"Warning 1946 (year I was born)Property 'SystemAppUserModel.ID' for shortcut 'Start Menu Settings.lnk' could not be set." Got a similar one for ClassicExplorer Settings. If this is too arcane, I'll post it in the CS forums.

2-- What's the right way to copy a folder or file from my backup image? I think I've done this maybe just once in the years I've been using Macrium.

Most imaging programs will let you mount their proprietary images. Those mounted images are read only. They look like hard drives in windows explorer, but they are not physical hard drives - they are called virtual drives.


Some types of images can be mounted read/write - wim images and vhd images for example.

One of the advantges of windows system image backup is that it creates images in vhd(x) format.

Some imaging programs offer that as an option- O&O diskimage does.

My images are .mrimg. The only thing I understood in your reply was "read-only" and "read-write," so I'll just try not to do virtual drives again.

What's the correct way to copy files or folders from your image? Was my mistake doing it in Win Explorer and not starting up Macrium ?

I suspect explorer simply msde a forward pass to macrium, macrium opened the image and handed off the ball back to explorer to display the read-only material as a virtual drive, meaning a piece of RAM was used rather than your HD. -- Tom Landry, Windows Cowboys
