I allow the software to scan the C hard disk for drivers and surprisingly it finds compatible drivers that run my external portable HD. The issue is what if the driver files on my internal hard disk are the ones that are affected?

Where do I get a Win PE USB driver and how do I put it on the rescue CD?

BTW I have tried using Linux but it doesn't see any USB devices even if I plug them in before booting with the rescue CD. and yes I have allowed Reflect to download and install WAIK

If you are booting from the WinPE disc, whatever USB drive you have should be detected by the BIOS and then WinPE and whatever program such as Macrium or Acronis should also detect this.

I had problems with Acronis' Linux rescue disc and had to create the WinPE/Acronis rescue disc so it would recognize all the drives. I have since moved to Macrium and have created the WinPE/Macrium rescue discs. I notice Macrium, during the disc creation process, profiles the PC hardware and creates the disc based on the hardware. I have only tested Macrium with one PC, but it did recognize a connected USB drive that I used to make the backup and to restore a hard drive (to test that it works). Because it profiles the PC hardware when making the rescue disc, I have created separate WinPE/Macrium rescue discs for each of my PC systems. One disc may work for all, I haven't tried that, but with the hardware profiling I went ahead and made separate discs.

I just tried creating a rescue USB flash drive on my desktop and tried it. USB drives loaded easily, why isn't that easy on my laptop? It's a Dell XPS 15z running 64bit Windows 7 with 8Gig ram.

I haven't looked at the 15Z BIOS, but there may be something in the BIOS that needs changed?

This is totally crazy but it worked:

I tried connecting my portable HD to the USB3 port ( dispite the HD being USB2) then I boot wth the rescue CD which asked for a USB driver, to which I clicked no or ignore, it warned me that USB devices wont work, I clicked Ok and there was my USB hard disk with the image files!!!

USB3 ports are backward compatible with USB2.0 devices. The USB 2.0 device will only work at USB 2.0 speed.

It sounds like that port is active at boot up.
