Is there a way to delete files from a backup image WITHOUT extracting it? Usually I explore the image and mount the drive, but when I try to delete files, it won't let me. Is there a way around this without having to extract the entire image back onto the drive?

It is read only.

You would need a different image format for read/write.

Does it offer to convert the image to a different format? wim and vhd are flexible.

No, it doesn't. Ok, I thought it might be the case - I guess it needs to be unpacked before any work can be done on it.

Macrium (and other backup imaging programmes) has an option to mount an existing backup image for exploration. When mounted with a drive letter, you can open individual files, copy them across to your disk(s) if you've corrupted or deleted a file, access hidden system files. There is an option (not so useful in my view) to edit or delete individual files in the mounted image - BUT these changes are then discarded on dismount.

Curious: Why do you wish to delete files from a backup?
