My HD

When do I mark the image I'm restoring as active and when do I replace the MBR in the following scenarios.
1-If I'm restoring only the C partition.
2-If I'm restoring only the system reserved.
3- If I'm restoring both the system reserved and the C partitions. (One image)
If I understand correctly:
For #1 I would mark the restoration as primary and would not replace the MBR.
For #2 and #3 I would mark the restoration as active and replace the MBR.
My confusion really, is when to replace the MBR.
Thanks.
