When do I mark the image I'm restoring as active and when do I replace the MBR in the following scenarios.

1-If I'm restoring only the C partition.

2-If I'm restoring only the system reserved.

3- If I'm restoring both the system reserved and the C partitions. (One image)

If I understand correctly:
For #1 I would mark the restoration as primary and would not replace the MBR.
For #2 and #3 I would mark the restoration as active and replace the MBR.

My confusion really, is when to replace the MBR.

Thanks.

Correct. That's what I do anyway. I'm not sure when you'd just want option 2.

The MBR and system reserved can be restored without ill effect since they are quite static unless damaged or you do partition changes.
The main key rule is don't make C: (Boot...the windows partition) active if you have a system reserved partition. Otherwise make C: active.

Thanks for the conformation mjf. :)

I used option 2 to prove, to myself, that if its part of a restoration that is when I need to replace the MBR.
