Hey guys, what's up?

So my desktop has a pretty big problem right now. All of my desktop icons are non-clickable. I have no idea what happened. You try to click on a desktop icon and nothing happens. When you mouse over it, it doesn't even highlight nor when you double click it, it doesn't highlight either. Please help! It is like my desktop is frozen!

Do you have kids? A roommate?

There is a "Hilarious" work prank where you take a snapshot of someones desktop, then move or delete all the icons and replace the background picture with the snapshot...

To test this theory, go to explorer and look inthe "desktop" folder near the top. You should see all the icons listed. If the folder is empty... [edit] Or try changing the background picture and see if the "icons" disapear[/edit]

It sounds like your computer is frozen. You should probably just try a "hard" reboot. Basically, hold the power button down for several seconds until the unit powers off. Then wait 30 seconds and power it on again and see if it will boot up normally. Hopefully it will and the problem was just a momentary glitch that can sometimes happen.

If you get it back up, you can look in the "event viewer," "windows logs," "application" tab to see if there are any error messages that might provide some clues as to what caused the problem. These entries are time stamped so you should look for error messages that occurred around the time the computer froze up.

Thanks for the solutions you two! My explorer bar worked at the bottom of my screen and so did my gadgets, but my desktop icons weren't clickable. So I had to do a reboot and come to find out it was actually my anti-virus program that needed to install a new version and restart my computer that made my desktop act weird. Thanks for the help!
