I just wiped out my *nix install for Windows 7 on my old eMachine W3052. At first the Generic Ethernet driver worked, but I had no sound. I went to the manufacturers driver page and found my chipset & on board device drivers but it installed them all, and the ethernet card driver failed, now I can't find any info about the ethernet card, or how to get a working driver.

How can I roll it back to the generic driver it was using before without removing the other drivers for my system?

Also Sims2 won't work, says I don't have a Direct X 9 compatable graphics card, but the card is brand new, and the latest DirectX is installed.

You can start by telling us what you have (system specs) and then we will know what hardware you have.

To roll back a specific driver go to device manager (assuming the old driver was also in windows, was it?), go to the device and roll it back. see snip

The old driver was just a generic driver that Windows decided could be used.
There is no driver installed now, and it complains it can't find a suitable driver... See photo:

As ZigZag says, please fill in your system specs so we can better help you.

Is your system Intel or AMD based to start with.

Not surprised in the least that you're having problems with Windows 7 on that computer. Using the model number for it I found this for the specs (seeing as Emachines doesn't show it),

Specifications for the Emachine W3052 - AfterDawn: Forums

which lead to this for the full specs on the motherboard,

FIC K7MNF-64 Mainboard

An old Nvidia nforce 2 based motherboard that if you're really lucky Windows will detect what is on it and install a generic driver for. Failing that the best you can hope for because of its age is that the last XP drivers for it will install,

WinXP - UDP (5.10)

which will probably take compatibility mode to install,

Yea Stormy

I just finished reading the specs on his system and was going to post the same message. I am surpised that any of his hardware is working with Win7.

If he has a slot open I guess he could add an ethernet card and go from there.

Not much a surprise to me that win7 runs on it :D. I'v taken very good care of my baby.

Upgraded HD to 180GB
Upgraded Video card (not sure the model, but it's newer, has s-video slot)
Upgraded Sound card
Upgraded RAM from 512MB to 1GB
(Lets not forget the nice LCD flat screen monitor :D)

Runs very smooth with Win7, like a dream :D
Actually runs better with Win7 than it did 6 years ago with WinXP (been running Linux on it in between).

Yes, it seems that any computer can one day with work run todays latest OS's :D, except for anything by HP.... or Dell... or Gateway (as my eMachine was not owned by gateway at the time of purchase i can say that).... pretty much I think eMachines are the ones that had a right idea.

9000 or 9200 doesn't matter much as there isn't a Windows 7 driver for them (and never will be), the best you're going to get for it is the last XP driver,

Okay so no chance at getting the proper ethernet driver. However it WAS working off of a generic driver by Microsoft, so what is the name of the generic driver that one could use for an ethernet card?

Click on Update Driver, then Browse, then Let me Choose. Look at what was previously installed and try each.

If this fails, browses to the windows/system32/drivers and /driverstore files until it picks up the driver.

if you had it working then the driver is still in there in one of those folders, likely showing in the Let Me Choose menu. You would have to uninstall it at a prompt to have it go completely away.
