I first noticed it in Word earlier. I was editing a file, and instead of being able to place the cursor in the middle of text, it highlighted everything up to that point

At first I thought it was just that one .docx file. So I opened another one that I was using yesterday with no problems and that is affected the same way.

When I opened Firefox, it knew something was up because it wanted to open in safe mode which I accepted.

Now some websites are behaving the same way as the Word doc, as if I have dragged my mouse across the text to highlight it, when all I was doing was clicking a link.

UPDATE:

OK, as if by magic, after browsing a few web pages everything is ok again now! Still curious to know what caused it though, before clicking "Solved"

Anyone else ever known anything like this?

thanks

Have you shut down and Rebooted? Do that first.

Thanks Edwar

No I didn't reboot, but if I had, I would have lost quite a bit of work. I had written two quite long paragraphs before remembering to save, and then I wasn't able to save, nor able to copy the text to put it into another app like Notepad.

The problem has fixed itself now, and I was able to save the Word document, thankfully.

Wouldn't hurt to check for malware after a little incident like that.
It's possible some background process was hanging for some reason and it did sort itself out.
Better safe than sorry especially since the browser was affected though.
Malwarebytes : Malwarebytes Anti-Malware removes malware including viruses, spyware, worms and trojans, plus it protects your computer
(let it update it's definitions before scanning)

Good thinking, thanks Maguscreed, I was just checking if I had the latest version. Oh dear:

It only detected one item. Anyone know what this is?

And is it ok to Remove it?

Sorry to be so thick, but it says Microsoft in the item part, so does that mean it's from Microsoft or that it targets Microsoft, ie: PCs?

thanks

It's a viral web-codec app.
Most likely the source of your problem.

How can a security program be outdated by 230 days? Or was that a misprint?

If you have the free version of malwarebytes, and never actually run it. It can get massively out of date.
