Major problems shutting down

Hello!

I recently bought a HP laptop running Windows 7. In a nutshell, I cannot effectively shut the computer down, and Windows updates do not install properly. When I try to shut down, the computer just spins for ages and eventually goes blank. Then, I have to select "start in safe mode" and shut down from there.

Has anybody else experienced this problem? Any advice on how I can fix this issue would be most welcome.

Two things, do you have anything plugged into your USB drives when you try to shut down?

Also, the very first thing you want to do is open up the Run Command as Administrator and type in SFC/ scannow This will repair your Windows Update and hopefully whatever else is holding up your PC from turning off. SFC is the System File Checker.

I would run scf /scannow to check the integrity of your system files...

It also can't hurt to check your Power Settings to make sure your Shut Down button does just that and isn't trying to enter Hibernate.

Please let us know if this helped. This sounds like a similar issue a friend of mine had and it was directly related to a corrupt Windows Update, which would prevent the PC from shutting down just like you are describing.

So if the SFC does not work I would recommend reading This Tutorial. If THAT fails you may want to backup your files and do a clean installation of Windows. Yesterday Microsoft released a patch for Windows Update.

How does one open the Run command as an Administrator? The only way I know to do it is to go through the "Accessories" menu and that doesn't work.

To run the Command propmt as the Administrator you do the following (non-advanced user method):

Step 1: Click Start and select All Programs. Click on the Accesories Folder.

Step 2: Right-click the program Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator. Now you are good to go!

NOTE: A quicker way to get to the Command Propt is to Click Start and type in "cmd". It will show up under Programs and you do the Right-Click and select Run as Administrator.

Has it always been like this? From the first day you bought it and turn it on then turned it off?

If so return it. That is if you haven't had it to long.

Another way, if you wish to have easy and constant access to the admin command prompt is to create a shortcut to cmd.exe (C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe or use the shortcut in All Programs\Accessories\Command Prompt) and set it to run as admin (see image). Place the shortcut where convenient:
