If I install a third-party program when logged-in on one user account, what (if anything) do I need to do to make this program fully available when logged in on another user account?

-- file access permissions?
-- desktop shortcuts?
-- start menu items?
-- anything else?

working on the theory that the installer is Admin and everyone else is Limited user

1. Permissions - Limited Users need both Read and Read and Execute rights (should be default)
2. yes shortcuts, desktop/start menu it doesnt matter, whichevers easier, Limited users have permission to access Program Files but they dont have permission to change anything so the shortcuts should point to C:\Program Files etc.

that should do it... alot of programs have an option to install for all users to automate the procedure, but for those that dont, the above will make it work

Hey guys -- Re: this, I just did a clean install with Win 7, and installed Firefox in one of my LUA accounts. After it ran, I could browse fine, until I closed the program and then it disappeared and showed up in the Admin Account?! What's the best workaround to this? Same as above? Just seems silly that a browser install defaults to the Admin account, even when setup in the LUA. Thanks a lot, Cheers, -- S

Hi Smak, the reason it has defaulted to the Admin account is because you installed it as Administrator. Basically, the installer was running in a kind of "virtual session" in your LUA, and was logged in as the Admin account.

To answer your question, just do what I posted above to fix it ;)

And, in future kindly start a new thread :) It makes us more likely to actually look at it, that big Ol' Green Tick means "its ok problem solved" so we don't tend to look at it any more :)

Lol, thanks -- both of your points are very helpful! Didn't think I could install programs in my LUA without going to get Admin priviledges; I guess I need to read up a little more on the LUA. Next time I'll start the new thread. I'm what you might call a 'Newbie," but I do learn fairly quickly! Cheers, -- S
