Solved Making a LynxOS bootable CD-R or usb HD

Howdy Folks
Sorry to barge in here asking a question right off the bat (though I've lurked here & at win10 forum for years), but this has me stumped. For my defense, I'm playing the Age Card. it's the only advantage to gett'n old.


I'm trying to update the SSD Firmware in my win7 pro offline graphics workstation. It's a Samsung 840 Pro. Spec's below if anyone cares.


Samsung's directions state to use unetbootin to make a Lynex bootable usb thumb with the FW.iso. You can guess that my BIOS has no idea of what that is.


Executing unetbootin has me point to the FW iso & then does everything needed on the thumb drive so it updates the FW automatically upon boot. My BIOS can boot from a usb HD as well as a CD-R, but I've so far have been unsuccessful in duplicating what unetbootin does for a thumb drive on either of those 2 drives. I'm not a coder btw.

Those 2 DLs/instructions were the first thing I followed & tried. I forgot why the instructions didn't work for me so started over.

This time I didn't stop after failing in being able to covert a usb HD into Fat32 from NTFS. ...unetbootin says if it can't see the drive (which it didn't) covert it to FAT32. Couldn't do that in my wVISTA, w7,w10 machines

After digging around this vast online wasteland, found out it can be done by CMD IF the drive is NTFS & under 32GB capacity. Several sources neglected to identify one or both points.Anyway, I got that accomplished & was optimistic.

unetbootin still doesn't see the drive, even though it's on that drive.

I thought perhaps the above happened because only a partition w/in the HD was under 32GB & unetbootin was seeing the entire drive.

Created a Simple Volume of the non-Fat32 space w/in the drive & this gets that part of the drive a separate Drive Letter & is seen as 2 HDs. Both w7 & w10 did indeed see it that way.

Had high hopes that everything would be cool now.

Nope...the 30GB Fat32 drive wasn't seen by unetbootin.

Does anyone know of a LynxOS source that might provide some hints?

The Easy Way


1) Flip the bird to Das Ubootin whatever. Very important.

2) Download Samsung Magician from here. You want the one entitled: "Samsung Magician Software for Consumer SSD (3)." Or if you prefer, the one with data migration built-in for easy cloning to and from a Samsung drive. (Most if not all flash memory hard drive manufactures include some kind of cloning software because they know their consumers will more than likely migrate from one drive to another).

3) At the bottom of Samsung Magician should be an update button. (For Crucial (Micron)[SUP]1[/SUP] drives they use Crucial Executive).



The Hard Way But Not Really


1) Download Ventoy from here. (Read a little about it)

2) Use Ventoy to format your thumb drive.

3) Now simply copy/paste the ISO file to the thumb drive that was formatted with Ventoy. Yes, just copy/paste the .ISO. The .ISO firmware you want is entitled DXM06B0Q.iso which is for the 840 Pro from the downloads link above under Firmware. Make sure it's the Pro version as there is just a non Pro 840 and an Evo version. Also make sure it's not for Mac. (Actually, it's the same damn ISO file. I computed a SHA256 hash for both and compared the two).

4) Boot the thumb drive. You may need to try UEFI or no UEFI if there's an option in your motherboard boot selection screen.

There are only three or four flash memory manufactures. G.Skill et al use one of the three (or four). And they are: Samsung, Micron (Crucial) and Hynix. I believe there's a fourth but forgot their name. Most of these fabrication plants are in Taiwan (an island south of China) or in South Korea for Samsung.

I gave Da Boot to Das boot-in (great flick wasn't it?....saw it in theaters w/ex #1, A Long Time Ago, In A Land Far Away.

Cutting to the chase...IT WORKED!....thanks so much!

Took some doing as there were some stumbling blocks...I'll point them out for anyone who GAS (I think I'm the first to use that....most of you will figure it out).

Got a tad confused after executing ventoy because it doesn't show anything in the now formatted disk. I didn't know if it was correct, but I copied vt's file & folders into that drive along with the FW.iso. Yes SP, the one you said to DL was the one I was already trying to use.

1st attempt failed when vt booted, ie, nothing happened...re-read the help file & then had it boot into memboot instead of normal boot..that got me to the Samsung menu. Everything seem like it was "going to plan"...but at the end, big message came up that it failed !!*#&$^!

Tried again & this time Samsung basically said, "NO you dumb ass, you already have this update installed"...jezzz, excuse meeee.

Sure enough the new FW shows after booting in w7.

RE: Your mention of Samsung magician...
I run different versions in both in the workstation that I was doing the update on & in my 18" Alienware laptop that has the same HD. That one's online & already had the xxx6xxx FW. I think I updated that years ago when Samsung was doing the updates via online connection, which they no longer do.

I've discovered some interesting things about that program's several versions..again, if anyone GAS...ask.

Yes, that's why I said this:

I figured that it may confuse someone thinking there should be something to show for Ventoy formatting the drive, but alas, you can only see Venoty's new partion in Windowss 10. Really, Windows 7 doesn't show it, but in 10 there will be another small drive show up that has Ventoy's EFI/BIOS/boot stuff in it. Those files are what make Ventoy boot any IMG, ISO, etc file you simply copy/paste to the Ventoy formatted drive. Ventoy presents a nice menu to select which .ISO or whatever you want to boot from. So you could have a Linux install ISO on there along side a Windows ISO install file and Memtest86. I believe the Ventoy website says it now supports some 1,000 different images thus far.

It really is a great little program. And it's open source too. The code is all right there on Github for anyone to look though and compile themselves if they wanted. Or at east if they know how... Great thing about compiling your own code is that you can customize it yourself and know what's in it. Like no shenanigans or whatever. I've installed Window 7 and Windows 10 with Ventoy. WinToUSB is another great program, but it's not all free, most if it is though.

Yes, it ventoy did the job I wanted done. The Chinese connection would have made me leery, but for the fact of your recommendation & that it was on GitHub.

Speaking of which...I've had no luck in returning that usb HD back to it's previous configuration



I've tried both ventoy & win's disk management. Even tried CMD. Got the larger part correct (back to NTFS) but everything on the 32GB side is greyed out. Several attempts w/ both to delete or shrink it, etc failed, including trying to get the larger partition to merge w/ it. I'm missing something, as the instructions to return the disk to it's previous state sound straight forward.

you can delete the 32mb partition with diskpart commands from admin cmd prompt or a 3rd party partition manager

select the partition and

delete partition override

Diskpart: Delete Partition Force in Windows 11,10, 8, 7

That did it SIW2.....wasn't familiar w/ the override command at all, & the site you pointed to helped lay it out nicely...many thanks for taking the time to help a stranger .....trust me, I be strange(r).

After getting such great assistance from you & F22 Simpilot I've started looking around your 'ol Homestead here. Very impressed w/ the maturity & professionalism of the regular posters. Being that I'm neither of those, I like to associate w/ folks like that....keep hopping some of it rubs off.

For my 1st Pesk Operation (PO).... I see in the Chillout Room, that the Admin, z3r010, is in the Mother Country & flying a version of the Union Jack. After writing this post & grabbing a brewski, I'll show him that we in the Colonies also fly it. A couple of hundred feet from where I sit, I've got it standing proud & tall...OK, kinda short actually. I'm also testing how much of a true Brit he (or anyone else across the pond) is.

Yeah, welcome to the forum. Used to live in Riverside, California BTW. My family and I moved out in the Summer of 1994. The place sure has changed for the absolute worst. It's a shame because California was such an awesome place. Living there I went to Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm twice. Been to Universal Studios, saw the space Shuttle land at Edwards (KEDW) twice, been to several beaches and San Juan Capistrano (a Spanish mission), Big Bear, Arrowhead, lots of places. I feel like my soul is still there sometimes. I was just a kid back then so have fond memories. Now I'm middle aged, 42 and living in Colorado. It's nice, but I don't care for snow and cold. I don't even ski! LOL I'm afraid of running into a tree or breaking my damn leg. It happens... I fractured an arm once which hurt like hell. Can't imagine a freaking leg.

Yes, Ventoy's main Dev is Chinese I believe, but that doesn't bother me since it is open source so anyone can look into the code and there are many other contributors. 77 as of this post. Contributors to ventoy/Ventoy . GitHub And just so we and the Internet big mouths or what ever are clear, it's not a racist thing, it's that whole Communist China BS. Don't even get me started on the human rights violations on a day bay day basis and whatnot. I'll write at least seven paragraphs.

Small world...live real close to the Riverside & San Diego county line. Up in the hills where it's still all rural, no commercial/retail allowed. Yet major cities are just down the hill.

I do want out of Calif also...the big counties & cities have been turned into criminal infested pig-styes. Riverside County is LOT's better than LA County/City. Our Sheriff & County Supervisors don't allow criminals to live, defecate, dump trash & commit crimes on the sidewalks. Haven't been to the city of Riverside for years, so can't comment on it. I stay completely out of LA City/ County. Just driving on their freeways is a lesson in disgusting sights.

Colorado is beautiful county, but you're right about the snow...a little goes a long way. It was OK during my skiing days, but not anymore.
