Making Windows 7 appear as if It's Windows Vista?

Hi,

I'm having a problem with Windows 7. It installed and runs fine, but I'm running into compatibility issues with it. Namely, I have to run a program called Cisco Clean Access to connect to my network, and currently Windows 7 is an "unsupported" operating system.

Is there anyway to make Windows 7 appear as if it's Vista so Clean Access will let me through?

Thanks

Hi Farkel and welcome,

You can run it in compatibility mode under Vista. This tutorial is for Vista but it should be the same and 7 will have a selection for Vista compatibility mode.

Compatibility Mode - Vista Forums

It might work, might not, but worth a try.

You could also open up the Action Center and go to Troubleshooting-Programs-Program Compatibility.

Some programs, such as Acer eFramework check for the actual OS version so compatability version does not work. Is there anyway to make 7 look as if it where vista (by changing the NT version in the registry?).

Some msi installers will also not run because they check the OS version, like MacDrive, these can be edited using Orca and remove the OS check (just saying in case anyone ran into a similar problem)

Thanks for the help, but I already tried messing with the compatibility of the program and it doesn't work.

I'm on the same grounds as OCM770, the program checks the actual identity of the OS regardless of it's compatibility

Sorry I couldn't help out more, you may just have to wait until it supports 7. Maybe someone else will have a solution. Good luck to you.

If it shows as "unsupported" there is no way to use it, it will always check for the system, even if you attempt to make it compatible.

Until such time as when CCA upgrade to 7 its a no go.

7 has an excellent networking setup,

Hi Farkel! I would suggest you also try these:

1. Run as Administrator. Probably, even disable UAC and then try! But always keep it in compatibility mode. Try XP as the compatibility option.

2. If possible, Install the program in Vista /XP on some other computer or your own if you have it, and then move the Installed program to 7's Program Files dir. Keep in mind that you will also have to export the required registry settings and also any datat that the program stores in C:\Users\<Your Username>\AppData\Local or LocalLow or Roaming dirs!

I suggest you try running it in Vista first as it has the same dir structure in the AppData dir.

Hope this helps!

Still, for example, using TweakNT.exe on Windows XP you could change your OS version ( in regsitry). Does anyone know the necessary key to do so?

Doesn't sound like a good idea to do that. Who knows what problems it could create.

Hi guys!
I managed to install Macdrive 7 in my Windows 7 build 7000 partition. I just deleted the condition entry on the Msi installer with Orca and it worked.
The problem is that the HSF partitions dont appear in My Computer, Even with the Mac Disk Explorer from Macdrive. I think this is because the HSF volumes are not mounted properly.
I noticed that in The Computer Manager the disks appear without an assigned letter.
Anybody familiar with this issue?
Thanks!

Why would you want to go to all this much trouble, the program has told you it can't run in Windows 7 so I would assume that until the program sorts itself out to be able to run in Windows 7 you are out of luck.
Don't forget this is a beta OS so not everything will work first time that's why its beta so people can find out what works and what doesn't and give feedback.
I had one site who's payment process did not work because Windows 7 uses IE8 so their site is not compatible with that yet. ;)
