Malwarebytes eating up Memory ???

Malwarebytes eating up cpu ???

Long story short, I have noted while malwarebytes is scanning the memory files, it really eats up system memory like 100% nearly the entire time may be 99% for a second or two. Is it normal ?


I'm aware since its scanning memory files, it might add load but seriously 100% ? RAM usage is normal though around 1-2gb. I started noticing this around a couple of weeks ago while I was playing an video file, it was stopping & playing when I had the scan on.



just wanted to know if its common for everyone or is there something I could check it out ? I have checked all the processes list in Windows Task manager, nothing looks suspicious.

I must admit that I only use Malwarebytes about once a month and have it set to priority [fast scan] in the settings so as to achieve must faster scanning. I normally only run it when I know I am not going to be using the computer for a while.

I just ran a scan under higher priority and it takes a max of 550MB of RAM.
I'm not sure if you're Malwarebytes is up to date and whether or not you have a paid version?
If you have a paid version, for now I would not recommend to update or reinstall Malwarebytes due to a known issue with the web protection feature that causes BSOD crashes. There is already a fix prepared for this, but it is still in beta and the best work-around is to disable web protection.
Either way, I do recommend to have a look at the Malwarebytes Support Tool.

Starts the task manager and observes which of the processes is consuming more RAM, some use Malwarebytes and it does not give enough time to have the equipment frozen.
If you are not convinced uninstall and observe the performance of the team. successes

How many desktop items do you have in your user profile?

I have seen AV utilisation (CPU/RAM) increase after there are an increase number of desktop items to keep track of.

I haven't tried fast scan before not sure if there's an option for free users, will check it out & see how it pans out. For me an usual system scan takes around 22-23 minutes, run an scan once or twice a week especially if I download higher no.of files in an week.

For me RAM usage is not an issue, as I have 4gb ram & even during the scan its only around 1-2 gb max.

Update - yes, its uptodate. Daily update it once or twice at the least.
I'm using free version as an backup option. I have Bitdefender paid version - entire can on BD takes around 2hours so I perform an entire system scan only once or twice a month, while regularly using the Quick Scan feature though.

for me RAM is not an issue though, its the cpu load that seems to spike pretty high especially during memory scan, so wanted to check if its normal. It may have been the same in the past but I only found it recently on my system

do u mean the icons on the desktop iko22 ? If yes, its a big Zero. I don't like having any desktop icons. My desktop shows just my static wallpaper not even recycle bin is on my desktop page

The thread title is a little confusing to your actual worries, it implies that you're worried Malwarebytes is taking too much memory which I believe it indeed does on your system and now you're indicating that memory isn't an issue?

I'm not sure if it's possible with both of the versions (free/paid) but if possible, you could change the settings of 'Impact of Scans on System' to 'Lower the priority of manual scans to improve multitasking'.
These days a scheduled scan isn't really necessary so you could essentially remove/disable any scheduled scan and occasionally run a scan to feel comfortable. This is for Malwarebytes, Bitdefender, Kaspersky and many other security vendors.

sorry for the confusion mate, I was referring to CPU loads. Couldn't edit thread title. If its how the software functions, I'm fine with it. I just wanted to check if it's something abnormal.

Thanks mate, I'll checkout if I have any settings to lower the priority which I may consider if I have to scan while working on.



Free version of Malwarebytes gives 1 scheduled scan for month, I have turned it on just for namesake. While there's no scan turned on BD, I only scan the system when I feel like doing it, I have even disabled auto updates as well.

I highly recommend to enable auto updates (unless you're on a limited connection), scan once and never again.
