You must have installed a.v. for realtime protection, with windows firewall enable, unless you have internet security suite with a.v. and firewall combo.

And for extra scans,

Use SUPERAntiSpyware.com - Downloading File

And Malwarebytes : Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a free download that removes viruses and malware from your computer

Scans? Run scans every few days.

There is no "how often" scan every and each time you believe something is wrong.

Remember always to have all your security updated.

I seem to feel that you have posted this question because of the scan duration you encountered....MBAM full scans has really went beyond the normal scanning from before. It took 2 hours + for a 160gb(56% full) in mine(and I have 3-4 drives in one pc, 6 pc systems). I don't know what's the problem there but I doubt that it's my system (minium ram I have is 3gb for the older ones..MBAM forums have not been able to pin down the problem.) Usually I full scan every 2-3 days the others weekly. Quick/Flash scan everyday.

Your resident AV will carry security you need. SASPy scans are much more faster than MBAM though. In addition I have HitmanPro and this is I use for everyday scan after web surfing but that's just me ;)

I really don't mind the scan duration because it's the effectiveness of the apps that's king!

Wow impressive scanning durations there guys. I still haven't made that switch to SSD but am contemplating that around next year when I sell the old ones.

Hi

My philosophy is a bit different from what is said in the posts above.
The extra anti-virus programs are used in case your main program misses something. So why wait a few days between those scans? Actually you should
scan with them after every update if you want to be sure. After all, the new virus definitions are added to the programs for a reason, viz. that a new virus is around. Now, scanning after every update is somewhat exaggerated but once a day is i.m.o. necessary. A quick scan does not take much time, except
with SUPERAntiSpyware.

Scanning with the main anti-virus program, also used for online protection, is pretty useless i.m.o because if the program lets a virus slip through it will also let it go when a scan is done. It makes more sense to scan with the other program(s) more often.
Or is my thinking here flawed?
(I have to have a look at that "rocket" scanning!).
Greetings.
