FAQ

1) Why Didn't you Install ME?

Since Windows ME cannot be upgraded to 2000, I chose to install 2000 straight from 98 as it was chronologically the next release. I might do an "alternate history" version to see what going from 98 to ME to XP looks like.


2) Did Doom 2 and Monkey Island work in Windows 7?

Yes. Sorry I didn't point that out explicitly in the video.


3) Can you do the same thing with Mac OS?

I don't know enough about Mac OS to be able to say, and I would not be the best person to do that experiment as I have never been a Mac user.


4) Where are you from?

Scotland.

One man has captured every install of Windows from 1.0 through to 7 and shared it with the world via YouTube.


The video details install processes and the UI for each version of Windows over the past 25 years and most importantly the upgrade process. The only exception is Windows ME, missing as you can only upgrade to ME or 2000 and not both. The video creator, Andrew Tait, used VMWare to install each version and started by installing MS-DOS 5.0 to prepare for the Windows 1.0 installation. Monkey Island and Doom 2 are both installed to test upgrade compatibility throughout the years.

An enterprising UK IT user who goes by "The Rasteri" on YouTube has completed an incredible "experiment" [video], in which he installed every major version of Windows, upgrading, in order of their release, inside a virtual machine.

He describes in the video, "It is hoped that this will shed light on how the Windows upgrade process has changed over the years."

For his testbed he used a machine running VMWare. He says he selected VMWare based on its snapshot and video recording capabilities. Also, importantly, VMWare offered full support for all legacy Windows operating systems.

I. Early Windows -- a Slow Evolution

To start, he installed MS-DOS 5.0 on the virtual machine, as most early versions of Windows required it as a starting point for installation. He describes, "Installation was surprisingly easy for an operating system of this age. It even partitioned and formatted the hard drive."

Now I would be interested to see it done with computers instead of vmware to see the stages where hardware must be changed, and how easy/hard it would have been to backup and reinstall the early OS's
