Many different BSODs and freezes when 3d rendering / browsing internet

Hello Sevenforums,

Just a few days ago my laptop has been suffering from many different BSODs and freezes/random reboots and black screens. I have noticed that BSODs are completely recreatable if I run any program/game that requires 3d rendering. Even when browsing the internet, after an hour or less a random freeze/bsod occurs. Rarely, if sound is playing the very end of it will loop until the computer is restarted.

I`ve tried doing a lot of things to pinpoint the problem, but to no avail.

I have:
Updated most drivers. There were at least 20 outdated but some still need updating...
Ran memtest86 and had 2 passes out of 2. (4gb ram)
System restored to long before the problem originated
Completely reset to factory settings.

Now for the multitudinous bsods I have encountered, they have included these error names:

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
fltmgr.sys
SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION

And others, including no error name at all at the top...

I assumed because it always happens when 3d rendering(e.g. chess titans that comes with win 7 is a good example) it may be the video card/driver. But, I am not sure if that is the cause because it happens randomly as well, when the graphics card may not be in use.

I attached the dump file according to the guide.
I will be following this closely for help, thank you. If i need to add any additional info, just post.

Your windows is not updated.
Download and install all windows updates (including the ones in optional), and we'll analyze after that.

I attempted updating 4 "important updates" including one optional, but it says 3 failed and only one succeeded. This has happened to me three times now with Windows Update, saying multiple updates failed.

It says: Error code 80070570 & Error code 80073712 are the cause.

Also: I crashed multiple times throughout downloading / installing, due to the time it took to download the updates. It was something like 900mb so it took a lot of time.
When I crashed, my computer would freeze at the Starting Windows screen and the windows logo would then appear scewed and the image all messed up, sometimes with lines going across the screen.

I had to run system repair, and whatever that did would stop the crash at the Starting Windows screen.

Is that trivial or does it mean something?

Update: Based on some research it appears I have corrupted some files because my system froze while installing Windows 7 SP1. It appears if the install is interrupted, it causes a lot of damage and Windows Update has to be fixed. I`m using a microsoft "fix it" program to see if I can clear that up.

What antivirus are you using?

I forgot to mention that i've done that about 3 times now, and it found corrupt files, but they were saved to cbs.log or something. I looked up instructions on how to view the corrupt files but I could never figure it out. I have the file if it is any use to you. (cbs.txt)

My antivirus is Malware bytes, but ive gone as far as to stop it from running on startup, but the service is still there.

Also important update: It appears I get the same issue when in safe mode with networking now. The reason was
fltmgr.sys on the blue screen..

I dont think MBAM is the cause, because I randomly crash on the windows startup screen as well as safe mode with networking. Thanks for the help so far.

I didn't mean MBAM is the problem.

A computer without antivirus is like life without love.

I suggest you use MSE which you can download from the link below. MBAM and MSE are a good combination which is suggested by many members on our forum. Download, install and run a complete scan with MSE to make sure you're free of viruses.

I am not good at understanding what the CBS.logs say but does SFC scannow say that it was able to fix the problems?

And..are you using any registry cleaning tools?

According to sfc scannow`s results, it said it was "not able to fix all problems" but saved them to cbs.txt in c:\windows\logs.

I occasionally used ccleaner to clean out the registry. Its never caused problems with my experience, but who knows.

And ok, I will try out MSE after I install service pack 1.

Ccleaner is good but sounds like your computer has some major corruptions.
Do not run Ccleaner while you're BSOD'ing as they might delete the dumps.

Keep us posted of the results on MSE and SP1.

And before I suggest anything else.. Follow instructions on this link and try downloading the updates you weren't able to.

Run SFC scannow again after using SURT.

Please have patience, we have an extremely large number of questions in our crash section and a lot of our members are away for Summer or Labor Day vacations. It will take time and not in mere hours sometimes to get assistance.

A prelimary look at your reports indicate possible driver problems. Updating all drivers is a good thing to do, but the problem may be due to a corrupted driver.

Driver Verifier
I'd suggest that you first backup your data and then make sure you've got access to another computer so you can contact us if problems arise. Then make a System Restore point (so you can restore the system using the Vista/Windows 7 Startup Repair feature).

In Windows 7 you can make a Startup Repair disk by going to Start....All Programs...Maintenance...Create a System Repair Disc - with Windows Vista you'll have to use your installation disk or the "Repair your computer" option at the top of the Safe Mode menu .

Then, here's the procedure:
- Go to Start and type in "verifier" (without the quotes) and press Enter
- Select "Create custom settings (for code developers)" and click "Next"
- Select "Select individual settings from a full list" and click "Next"
- Select everything EXCEPT FOR "Low Resource Simulation" and click "Next"
- Select "Select driver names from a list" and click "Next"
Then select all drivers NOT provided by Microsoft and click "Next"
- Select "Finish" on the next page.

Reboot the system and wait for it to crash to the Blue Screen. Continue to use your system normally, and if you know what causes the crash, do that repeatedly. The objective here is to get the system to crash because Driver Verifier is stressing the drivers out. If it doesn't crash for you, then let it run for at least 36 hours of continuous operation (an estimate on my part).

If you can't get into Windows because it crashes too soon, try it in Safe Mode.
If you can't get into Safe Mode, try using System Restore from your installation DVD to set the system back to the previous restore point that you created.
Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable
In addition take memtest and run for 8 passes and then take each stick and test for 6 passes. We MUST be sure once a test is incorrectly passed, it is hard to find it as a cause of a problem
Update to SP1 if not already done,
Install all updates
Do not overclock, use default settings.
We can stress test graphics if it comes down to that.

Update: It appears that it is impossible for me to install SP1, due to my system hanging up sometime during the process. I've tried multiple times now. I did have SP1 pre-reset, so not sure how important that is.

Currently, after the most recent crash, it's very hard for me to get past the starting windows screen. If I power off and on, I can get to the "choose safe mode" screen, but now my system hangs at classpnp.sys

In this current state the computer very hard to use unless there is another option.

I'm thinking this is a hardware failure, but I don't know. Posting from my iPod.

Update: I was able to get on and did the driver verifier process you described. I was able to get the system to freeze very easily; but now what? Freezes seem far more prevalent on my machine now than before, when I first started having problemsi mostly encountered bsods.

In response to Koolkat, i can't install the SURT due to the system hanging after 5 to 30 minutes.

The purpose of Verifier is not to have freezes but to stress the bad drivers to BSOD. We then look at the dmp and determine the weak drivers and replace them.

Do you have any documents/pictures in your user profile?
Take a back up of those cause the next thing I am going to suggest would need that.

And have you tried Richards suggestions on driver verifier?

Richc: it might take a long time before I can make a bsod occur, only had maybe two today while I've had over 15 freezes.
Kool: I would not mind completely resetting everything and just updating windows off the bat; unfortunately the last time I did that, my laptop manufacturer toshiba has a huge amount of junk ware that they install which in itself caused bsods.

Just a note, i don't have a disc to re install windows due to the nature of toshiba, forcing me to have all their sponsored programs.
And yes, I was able to configure driver verifier.

The verifier puts a lot of stress on the drivers. 36 hours is usually more than enough time.
If negative we may want to stress the Graphics.

Do you have a valid key number?
