I see alot of computers now with 8gb or more of ram. Ive been out of touch with the computer world for a while now but last i remember with a 64x os the usable limit was 4gb. Has it gone up? I have 64x W7 and when i built my computer i only put 4gb in it.

I have W7 64x Home edition

What do you think?

Thanks!

There are 2 "Home" editions, one is "Home" basic, the other is "Home" Premium. The basic version doesn't have the shiny glittery Aero desktop effects, and it is limited to 8GB of RAM. The premium has Aero, and is limited to 16GB of RAM.

Which one do you have?

I've never had my RAM meter go over 55% with 4GB, so I can't imagine needing 16GB! That's some serious computing power.

Blue and balck slots are the channels.

IMHO, Anything from 4-8Gb is Good.

4GB is perfectly fine for most users, even gamers. For the most part its all you really need.

Between 6-8GB is nice if youre into heavier video encoding,Photo shop work, or even run a virtual machine.
It will also give you a bit larger memory footprint, (more space for superfetch to do its thing which is good).

I do alot of these things, and multi task alot, & even with 8GB RAM, I do not go over 4GB that often.
When I do its usually when video encoding, & still under 6GB for the most part.
However, 2-2.25GB Idle use is normal for my 8gig machine.

So it comes down to what you use your PC for I think.
I would certainly think anything over 8GB would be a waste, at least for me :)

But if you want to upgrade to 8GB for games to perform better, Im afraid you may be dissappointed.

4gb is pretty much the standard now and is more than adequate for most applications. There is a noticeable decrease in the time it takes to launch or switch between the heavier applications when you upgrade from 4 - 8 gb but any more than that is overkill if you're not into video editing or running multiple virtual machines.

Also. I have the EVGA nForce 680i motherboard. It has the 4 ram slots, 2 blue and 2 black. With this motherboard im limited to 4gbs anyway. correct? I always thought blue was ddr2 and black was ddr.

no new ram is dual channel or tri channel for i series CPU when you by ram you will have 2 chips they could be a 2 GB set 2X1 GB 4 GB set 2X2GB i even think there is a 8GB set 2X4GB when you put ram in you match them up to color for you first set would be what ever color slot 1 is in my board i have yellow and orange yellow is slot 1 and 3 orange slot 2 and 4 i have a 4 GB set 2x2GB and i used slot 1 and 3 it bumps it up to 128 bit mode which means the ram works fast

(at least thats how i understand it)
