I posted an issue on w/end that each time I booted up W7 kept creating a new profile "preparing desktop"

I have OS on an SSD ... but all programs & saved docs are on an HDD ...... I noticed that athe HDD no longer shows in 'My computer"

I did try connecting it via a sandberg all-in-one device Sandberg USB All-In-1 Hard Disk Link (133-43)

HDD does spin up, but still does not show in 'My Computer'

This is only a couple of months old and under warranty so can get it replaced, but would like to get access to 'my documents' on it first, as it is spinning up, are there any diagnostics / HDD utitlities that might help ........

It is a Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB
I bought the Caviar Black as they are supposed to be more reliable that the 'Blue' I had previoulsy.

in the start menu search box type "Computer Management" and in the "Storage" section click on "Disk Management". Does it show up in there? If so what file format, free space etc. does it say?

My Computer

OS
Windows 7 Professional 32 Bit
I have gone alternative route and used diskmgmt.msc

It shows my ssd as disk 0 with 2 partitions and my DVD rw

but does not show the HDD
Same if I try to plug it in to another PC using a sata to USB converter.

This means that the computer is not recognising it as a disk drive (or at all). If it also does not show up in task manager then it sounds like the hard drive is getting power but the data side of it isnt working :(

I have rasied Tkt with Western Digital .... not worried about chnaging HDD ... just would lose any docs/pics/emails in the 2 months since building PC and now .....

annoying as I bought Caviar Black to have reliability

Plug the HD directly into the mobo and not via some intermediary. If it shows up run a Disk Check

Next download Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for DOS (CD), burn ISO to CD using WIndows Image Burner, boot and run a extended scan of HD to find its condition.

Sometimes free Partition Wizard Home Edition can see the HD when Disk Mgmt can't and Check File System can bring it back to life.

It was when it failed.
When I plug it straight into mobo ... it spins up, but is not detected by OS ? .... i.e. does not show only shows Drv0 (ssd) and my DVD

Does the drive show up in the BIOS ? ?

Just tried it in 2 separate PC's
It spins up, but is not detected by BIOS
and not seen by OS either direct plu into mobo or when via SATA to USB adapter

If the WD disk doesn't detect it to do repairs then you'll need to replace it.
