I've been wondering if the 'size fudging' that exists with drive sizes may have something to do with it.

I don't use USBs for installation, just DVDs and I boot the ISO to install in VB; sorry I'm not much help with that.

Size fudging is definitely the culprit! I was trying on a pair of Patriot 4 GB drives with no luck. I remember I made a flash drive for my wife to use, which was a SanDisk Cruzer 4 GB, and the USB/DVD tool is in the process of copying the combined SP1 .iso over to it. No errors about drive size.

Deacon, can you post the extracted iso size of your Win7 SP1 install?

I used UltraISO's Optimize feature to shrink it a little bit. I also was wrong above. On my wife's Cruzer, it went to 99% and then decided it couldn't fit. So, I ended up picking up an 8 GB drive today to use.

I think it replaces the other two but I'm not 100% sure.

I believe that's the pre-sp1 version, as it's the same file, file name and file size that I downloaded sometime back (and is presently running here).

The date published is listed as 2/18/2011 and under System requirements it says, Supported Operating Systems:Windows 7 Service Pack 1;Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. That makes me think they updated it? I downloaded it but haven't burned or installed it yet.

It also says version 3. I compared what I downloaded before to this new download and a quick glance shows the date modified and file sizes are identical. The folders on the new download have newer dates 2/20/2011, but the files in them look to match the dates on the older download. I didn't check every file though. I'm still confused. I'm saving this one to one of my thumb drives anyway, and I'll hold off on burning the disk for now.

OK, I wasn't sure if you still might be interested in having the latest version or not. I went the other route and just made separate 32 bit and 64 bit universal install thumbdrives. I already had two 4 gig drives on hand.

I'm toying with doing that as well, just to simplify. I only use x86 at work on my employee's systems, and I only use x64 at home.

There is a benefit to that.

The repair functions for the right architecture
Cause I do not think you can add the x64 Repair functions to the x86 install environment.
