Had to install an old version of mcafee 2007 and then update it to the latest version on a client computer the other day. (they have paid their subscription upto end of next year

1PC wired straight into the modem/router has no problems apart from Mcafee takes the whole day to update, and makes the PC almost unusable. Once updated the PC is relatively quick. Next update the same thing happens. Download any file from the www and the unit works fine. (+- 7Mb line connection) downloads large files pretty quickly.

Uninstalled mcafee with the tool from mcafee's own site and used ccleaner to make sure ... then re-installed macafee .... made no difference.

Ended up formatting the PC and totally re-installing from scratch (win XP)

Tried re-installing mcafee ... program now reckons I must install wireless internet security even though the router doesn't have wireless nor the PC. Macafee then says no wireless connection detected and continues to install ..

Now there is an macafee error everytime the system starts saying "no wireless networks detected" and waits until you click OK. (can't diasable this in msconfig or registry ... it's part of the macafee service which has to start )

And now when it tries to update it takes for ever to update and the same thing happens. (unit is slow) I also tried to update it from a different internet location and still got the same problem.

Ended up removing macafee completely and switching to kaspersky now the PC is working nice and speedy and has no problems .... not happy :(

P.S soz I went on a bit but it was really peeing me off :)

Lol best to get it off ya chest man!

To be honest , Mcafee and norton are a total pile of shite , just slow you pc down to hell!

I used AVG free antivirus for 8 years , and then Avast free for the last year , never had a single virus but hey I am the master of safe porn sites lol :)

I had nothing but problems with McAfee.

It regularly missed viruses in my FD that I used at school, while MSE caught them.

It hosed itself so badly during a "security center upgrade" that even system restore 3 or 4 points back couldn't fix it. After reloading it and applying the "Suggested upgrade", once again it hosed itself. That was when I decided to remove it....

Three months after removing it, there was a remaining file deep within the system that caused problems when I tried to run any on demand security software. This file remained despite the fact I used their uninstaller.

It came bundled with the system, I did not choose it......

One of the first things I do or recommend when my family or friends buy a new laptop with preinstalled McAfee is to download the McAfee removal tool and nuke it :-D
I had it on Windows 98 many years ago. Was recalcitrant already back then.

Don't know about AT&T in other parts of the US, but they offer free McAfee as part of their high speed DSL service here in Texas. (Now there's a triple whammy - using the words McAfee, high speed, and service all in the same sentence when talking about AT&T .) Anyway, the user forums are usually clogged with disgruntled folks complaining about how McAfee slows things down.

I used Mcafee many years ago when I got my first PC and it basically crippled it. I know many people will disagree bit I have been using Norton Internet Security for many years and have never been infected with one virus.

do ukno why u've 'never been infected' its because norton doesnt pick up the virus to start with.

AND FYI a anti virus, DOESNT stop viruses coming onto your computer

it's like saying i never get caught by a speed camera because i close my eyes!

Saying that doesn't go anywhere, you say Norton doesn't pick up virus' but Anti-Virus' don't stop malware.

OK, you've used AVG and Avast for 9 years, how is Norton going to be the same nearly a decade on? You obviously haven't tried it.

I have used Norton before in 2006 and before. Worst anti-virus I have ever used, but experiences differ person-person.
Then My dad tried McAffee, was okay for a bit, then it failed and the PC was infected again.
Ever since the family computers have had Avast! along with Malwarebytes installed, no problems. the only issue is when one of the computer illiterate siblings download a nasty file, but Malwarebytes cleans that up.
Another good way for avoid nasties (Firefox users only) is an add-on called WOT (Web of Trust) that has a database of just about every site on the internet. The users give their input of their experience of the website to warn others if the site is bad or confirm it is safe (putting in your input is voluntary, it doesn't force you). The add-on will block a bad site, giving you the option to ignore the warning and continue to the site, or take you to the page to see what other people have experienced.
And I have Avast Web-Rep too :)

Like I said many people will disagree. Your right a anti virus does not stop a virus from getting on your computer. 90% of viruses can be avoided with common sense. I also run online scanners such as ESET and since I have been using NIS all has been clean

do they disagree because its the truth? and yes you can avoid lots of viruses, but whats the point of paying fomr something that doesn’t cover you for what your paying? Sounds pointless to me. and again running online scanners would be wise, rather than leaving all your eggs in the dangerous basket of Symantec

Saying that doesn't go anywhere, you say Norton doesn't pick up virus' but Anti-Virus' don't stop malware
and it does go somewhere, it takes the conception of Symantec offering protection against a mouse sneezing.
If you're smart enough you'll know when you're infected, so stop hating

And sorry have i missed something who’s hating who?

and yes your correct 'Norton antivirus' doesnt pick up viruses as its a AV, not a malware scanner!? i didnt say anything as such. and yes its fairly obvious if you have been infected, but i dont like to get that far, so i spend my money on a worthwhile product
